This lesson shows you how to play a simple funk rhythm and three separate funk lead parts. The lead parts are incredibly basic, but I wanted to show you how to take a simple lead part and repeat it over and over again to get a really cool groove effect. Obviously with the jam track you can start to make up your own as well - so don't just rely on these... use them as examples, but then try to create your own. Just focus on trying to find a repeatable groove, that's one of the secrets to funk … [Read more...]
Blues Rhythm and Lead Guitar Lesson – LEG007
I asked the question on Facebook what type of lesson should I create next? And a few people responded that they would like a lesson on how to make a more interesting rhythm, by mixing in some lead licks at the same time. I grabbed my guitar and came up with a really cool way to play a slow blues rhythm / lead part in the key of A. This is a combination of various artists licks including Eric Clapton and Albert King. The nice thing about learning how to play this way is that you can play all … [Read more...]
The Double Stop: A Blues Rhythm / Lead Guitar Lesson – LEG008
So what the heck is a double stop anyway? It’s really just a fancy way of saying, “2 strings at once” – not really sure what the “stop” part has to do with anything (if someone knows feel free to leave a comment). So in addition to double stops there are also triple and quadruple stops as well – but the double stop is the most common on guitar. When I think of playing double stop guitar solos on the guitar, I almost automatically think of Chuck Berry. He had a great way of playing really … [Read more...]
The Turnaround – LEG009
This is a fairly simple lesson that demonstrates 3 different types of blues turnarounds. If you're wondering what the heck a turnaround is, it's what musicians refer to when they're playing a few licks to get from the end of one verse to the beginning of the next. So in 12 bar blues for example, the turn around is the little riff that you play to get you from the 12th bar, back to the first bar. You'll recognize it in the video right away because it's such a familiar / even predictable sound. … [Read more...]
Create Your Own Fingerstyle Compositions On The Guitar – LEG010
Ok OGLWithme, I thought your suggestion on a video of this nature was a good one - so I put one together. I realized though as I was editing this that it's next to impossible to cover everything that needs to be covered with the 10 minute constraints that you have with YouTube, but I tried to cover the basics to give you an idea of at least my thought process for how to approach something like this. The important thing to remember is that 1) determine which key you're going to do it in, 2) … [Read more...]
Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson in the key of E – LEG011
Hey folks, I'm back in business! To get things rolling again I thought it would be good to start with a shuffle blues rhythm guitar lesson. This lesson isn't really "in the style of" any particular artist, but is a type of rhythm I often find myself using when playing rhythm. The nice thing about a rhythm like this is that it works really well on either an acoustic guitar or an electric and sounds good played either fast or slow. I have no idea who this in inspired by, probably a combination of … [Read more...]
B.B. King Guitar Lesson – Understanding His Approach – LEG012
In this lesson I've decided to part from writing a solo "in the style of" and then teaching it to you note for note. I'm not sure how good of a lesson that is in the long term. When you're learning a new instrument, there will always be a fair amount of memorization in the beginning... but most people can never make it past the memorization part... they learn it.. and can replicate it, but then ask, "now what?". So I'd like to start explaining how the boundaries for guitar solos and rhythm work … [Read more...]
Eric Clapton Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson – Part 2: Advanced – LEG013
In this lesson, we'll continue looking at how Eric Clapton approaches playing blues rhythm guitar. This lesson is really a continuation of the previous Eric Clapton Rhythm Guitar Lesson, however this lesson is a little more advanced and has a lot of extra licks that spice it up. Neither of these Clapton lessons are direct copies of a particular song, but instead are a hybrid of common guitar phrases that he uses when playing rhythm. I had several requests for more Clapton rhythm stuff so … [Read more...]
Eric Clapton Rhythm Guitar Lesson – LEG014
Most Eric Clapton guitar lessons you'll find online will focus on his approach to lead guitar, that's what most people associate Eric Clapton with. In this lesson, however, we're going to take a look at one of the ways Eric Clapton might approach playing rhythm on a slow blues in the key of A. You might notice that these licks sound very much like a piano part. The reason for that is that Clapton is a huge fan of Maceo Merriweather, who was an accomplished blues piano player back in the in … [Read more...]
Keith Richards Style Rhythm Guitar Lesson – LEG016
In this guitar lesson I'm continuing showing different rhythm guitar parts and in this lesson I demonstrate how to play a Keith Richards style rhythm. Keith is about the best rhythm guitar player out there and his contributions to Rolling Stone songs are what define them (well Mick Jagger's voice too of course). Keith is a nice mixture of Muddy Waters style Chicago blues, mixed with some Carl Perkins rockabilly, with a little country pedal-steel sounding twang. Even though he's technically the … [Read more...]
