Funk Guitar Lesson – Rhythm and Lead – LEG004

Description

This lesson shows you how to play a simple funk rhythm and three separate funk lead parts. The lead parts are incredibly basic, but I wanted to show you how to take a simple lead part and repeat it over and over again to get a really cool groove effect. Obviously with the jam track you can start to make up your own as well – so don’t just rely on these… use them as examples, but then try to create your own. Just focus on trying to find a repeatable groove, that’s one of the secrets to funk guitar. If there is enough interest, I could very easily create many more funk / groove guitar lessons like this – just leave a comment and let me know!

@DaveAMac - simple sound really - just a super clean channel with some basic “plate” reverb… you could achieve the same effect with any amp really.

cool lesson Brian - funk is something I struggle with a bit, so this was helpful. Any tips on using a wah with this sort of stuff.

Well, sort of hard to articulate a wah wah technique with text like this.. but essentially when you’re using a wah wah with a funk rhythm like this you’re rocking the pedal in the same motion as if you were tapping your foot to the beat.  That can create a really cool sounding groove.

If you know the scales, thats your first step - now you just need to learn some licks to use within those scales so that you can apply them.  Determine what style you like (what artist do you want to sound like), and then try to figure out his / her licks.

    Brian,
I am really digging the Rhythm and lead lessons!  I just joined the site, and will become a premium member shortly.  I hope you do more lessons that show how to play rhythm and lead parts by oneself.  I play alone most of the time, so it is much more fun.  On the occasion I get to jam with friends, I get stuck playing strictly rhythm because I am not confident enough to through some lead lines in the mix. These lessons will help me mix it up and sound better.
