Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson in the key of E – LEG011

Description

Hey folks, I’m back in business! To get things rolling again I thought it would be good to start with a shuffle blues rhythm guitar lesson. This lesson isn’t really “in the style of” any particular artist, but is a type of rhythm I often find myself using when playing rhythm. The nice thing about a rhythm like this is that it works really well on either an acoustic guitar or an electric and sounds good played either fast or slow. I have no idea who this in inspired by, probably a combination of artists. This is intended for intermediate and up players.. so if you’d just picked up a guitar, you’ll probably want to stay away from this lesson until you become a little more comfortable with basic strum patterns.

    Hey Brian,

Its great to see you back in Europe! Was beginning to worry there was something wrong with you. It is remarkable how I found the lessons so hard to start with and now I can pick the stuff up so much more quickly.  It proves your method of teaching works!!!!  Thanks for this great rhythmn lesson.  Can’t wait for some more.

    How’s the new job going?

Im past your “beginners guitar course” but not up to speed of most of your rhythm or lead lessons. Could you PLEASE post some new, beginner videos? Your teaching style, camera and method works GREAT!  Thanks again!

    Hey Brian,

This is really cool.  I did this lesson some time ago when I was just starting on the site and thought I would review it.  Turns out I got it so wrong the first time and yet it was still a great rhythm to play instead of the power chords.  SO, now I’ve got it right this time I have two versions and obviously it has stimulated me to try different variations.  Very liberating!

A very happy New Year to you,

    Dr Golf

    Hi Brian,

Albert Collins is one of my favorites BUT to get the “Ice pick” sound he tuned to a minor key and used a capo.  Robert Cray always said that it was a nightmare to get Albert’s sound until he realised that he used a different tuning.

Can you achieve that “sound” with EADGBE or will we need to use Albert’s approach.  It would be great to get some Tele sounds like him as he was so distinctive and you knew it was him as soon as the track started.  I have a video that was taken, maybe, twenty years ago, in Germany, of Albert playing a set with his band and it is brilliant.  Sadly, I don’t have a video player anymore so can’t watch it.

All the best and looking forward to the lesson.  Incidentally, there are a number of the internet “tutors” who are trying to copy your way of teaching which is a feather in your cap.  Well done.

    Andrew

i just started with the lesson. at the beginning we form an E shape, pick the low E, then hammer on the first fret of the G string. you dont comment concerning this in the video but you dont appear to be playing the A and D strings just catching that G for the hammer on. was this just a way to conveniently hold the neck while playing these particular chords. what i started out doing was playing all four middle strings then hammering on the G and it kinda gets burried in all that extra sound made by those three other strings. this is a really groovy sounding tune, thanks for keeping it free:)

    Hi Brian

Great lesson. Can you just clarify one thing for me. I have watched the video and have the tabs. Sorry to ask a rather mundane question. After the A in bar 2 there is the slide to 3/4. In the video you play the top two open strings but on the tab it is recorded as a little A. Does it make any difference ? Is it personal interpretation ?

    Best wishes once agin

    Steve

Hey Steve, when I create these lessons - I usually just start the camera rolling and come up with the material first, then go back and create the tab based on what I played.. so there’s a chance that the tab was slightly off in that area.. Try not to get TOO locked into what the tab represents and use it as a guide.. but let your ear be the ultimate guide in the end.  I would definitely lean towards personal interpretation on this one 🙂

    I’m a beginner …

There is only 11 measures, normally should not 12 steps?
    I - I - I - I - IV - IV - I - I - V - IV - I - V
    Or here: I - I - I - I - IV - IV - I - I - V - IV - (I = turnaround)

1000 thank you for this video, this is my first rhythm blues :-)
