Vintage R&B (Rhythm and Lead) Guitar Lesson – EP118

Description

I had a chance to spend a few days in Memphis, TN last weekend and while I was there I took the Sun Studio tour. I highly recommend that tour to any musician – so much history in that small building! Throughout the tour they were playing some of the great Sun Records recordings by artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, and the list goes on and on. I created this week’s “Call and Response”, blues rhythm and lead guitar lesson as a tribute to some of the great guitar work that came from that vintage 1950’s era.

    Brian,

All I can say, is that you are keeping me very busy!!! Another great one.
On this subject, my wife and I couple of years ago saw a great show in Vegas called “The Million Dollar Quartet” I was a great show. As you probably already know, it was about the impromptu jam session involving Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash back in 1956 (Ha!! year I was born), made at Sun Records. It also covered the history of Sun records. One of the best shown I’ve seen in Vegas. I believe Roy Orbison was also at that recording, but was not part of the show.

Thanks for all the great lessons.
    Mark

I love the lesson! I love the shirt. I loved Sun Records. We stayed in Memphis for a while when we had to leave New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It was the highlight of my trip

Another very interesting and useful lesson. Shows how something can be fun to play without being that difficult.

    Hi Brian,
We were in Memphis this May and took the tour of Sun records. I’m glad my wife convinced me to do Stax records also. So many artists are represented there like Booker T, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding. Got to see one of Steve Cropper’ guitars. Very cool tour!

Great lesson. Every time I play the lesson, or play along with it I get a big ass grin. Really gets the juice going. How about a follow up lesson along the same vein.

Haven’t been to Memphis but I cleaned windows for Donald “Duck” Dunn for about 5 years and upto his death. I still do business with June, Ducks wife and her son Jeff .. I’ve seen all his basses including his 59 fender precision.Duck was one of the nicest and most humble people you could have met. His office was full of gold and plantinum albums….By the way, Brian, thanks for the great lessons!!!!!

G/day Brian, This particular style of guitar brings back so many memories for me musically. It was the Rockabilly thing that really grabbed me when I was probably only seven or eight years old. Love the music, thanks for the lesson, and thanks for the memories.
