Here’s another one I found fun to jam over. The cool thing about this one is that it switches between major and minor keys. Its in the key of A, but then switches to F# and back to A. Im a HUGE fan of switching back and forth between major and relative minor keys like that! Gives a song some really cool depth in my opinion…

Billy,
I would really love it if you could do a video lesson on some of your favourite repeating circular licks, especially with respect to the picking hand and placement of pull-offs and hammer-ons. Brian and Bryce have both encouraged members teaching each other. Passing on some of your skill would be a great help to me and I’m sure many members would also appreciate it.

Sure I’d love to show what I’m doing. However I’m not sure what you mean by “circular licks”. What I suggest is going through the video I just posted and give me the time stamps at which point you see me doing something you’d like me to explain. That way I can go back and look at it and see which licks you’re reffering too.
For example “at 1:47 you did a cool lick”-

Billy,
There are so many of them. I’m referring to the licks with lots of repetition that seem to really give you a burst of speed, you seem to have several “go to” tricks, ie; .16 sec, .21, .26, .39, .47 through .50, 1:15, 1:45, 1:56 is a great example, 2:45.

Cool, Billy. Great playing. I learned something here, I think, for this style of song/playing.
When you switch to the A major pentatonic box at the second and fourth frets for your lead playing, it still sounds like minor pentatonic licks to me, just coolly different. I think this is because when you go there, the backing track has now changed to Fm, which makes me think you are still playing in the minor pentatonic. In the Crossroads (also A major song), for example, it sounds happy playing at the second and fourth frets, because there is no Fm chord in background.
Also similar, in Heart of Stone by Rolling Stones, song is in key of C, but lead solo is over Am chord (relative minor?), which gives a similar cool effect, I think.
So I guess playing over relative minor means playing over the 6th chord (a minor chord) in a given major scale?

Thank you sir! SO I’ll admit that I am not overly well versed in music theory. I’m still learning it. In regards to what I did there, the song is in the key of Am. One of the sections switches to F# major which is the relative major to Am. Brian discusses this in various videos- you simply move the pentatonic patterns down three frets, which is what I did there. I used pentatonic patterns exclusively in the whole video, mostly the first, second, and the fourth patterns, with occasional phrasing in the third and fifth patterns here and there. Another cool song that does this is While my guitar gently weeps. It’s in Am but switches back and forth between Am and F# major.
I enjoy using these backing tracks because I need to work on my phrasing and timing while listening to the beat. I’ve never played in a band (although I want too) so these backing tracks help out a lot.-

Thanks, Billy. I meant to say F# minor, not F minor. When I played along with that backing track, it sounded to me like the two chords in it were A major and F# minor.
Anyway, fantastic lead playing on this!!

Great Billy! Great playing level. I love to switch between major and minor. It’s a lot of fun and we have loads of opportunities to play differently. I can not do that as fast as you do; I have much to do there. Anyway; good that you show the fretboard. So your work can be well tracked with the left hand.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Billy you certainly have the speed thing down. Like John I’d like to see you show us mortals how your pick hand is working. Hammers, pulls, etc.
You don’t appear to be working very hard yet you produce a LOT of notes.
Cool backing track by the way.

It’s a 2012 Gibson Les Paul custom with a maple neck and fretboard. Not sure of its weight, but I use .10 gauge strings on all my guitars. The picks I use are heavy gauge with these textured grip areas on both sides, can’t remember the brand. The Marshall amp you see in the background isn’t what you’re hearing me play through. I’m using the GarageBand program with the amp simulator feature.

I agree with John (charjo). The “circular licks” starting around 0:46 and 1:56 are great examples.
One thing I’ve found that helps tremendously trying to pick these apart is to use a music speed changing app that keeps the pitch the same. Then it’s just a matter of building up the speed to get to Billy’s blazing tempo here. Piece of cake, right? lol

“Blazing tempo” HAHAHAHAHAHA! You guys are too kind, but I’d hardly call any of my playing blazing/ fast. Anyway, I’m gonna work on that video this afternoon/ evening for you guys 😉
