The Beatles + Eric Clapton + Song about a Guitar = Doesn’t get much better than that. George was fed up with his bandmates and brought Eric by to play, and the other Beatles were on their best behavior because the had “company”. They all played so damn well on this classic.

Great guitar tracks, Ralph. What effects were you using on the electric guitar in the verses? Did you redo the solo?

Thanks John. On the verses I used tremolo/chorus on a Tweed Patch. On the solos I used a Leslie Rotary effect. I didn’t redo the solos because I’m lazy. LOL. If I redid the solos, I’d probably play them with the 339. I was trying to go for a Concert For George kind of version.

You’re covering the absolute best songs Ralph. This is my Number 2 all time favourite. Mr Knopfler and ‘Sultans’ is THE song for me but this comes close. Love your guitar work on this, so authentic sounding and with just the right vibe! Do you work your guitar parts out by ear, use tab, YouTube or standard notation? All the best and thanks always for your encouraging feedback on my videos. 🥸🎸🥸

Thank You Garry. I’ve known this song for years. I do have guitar tab for it, but it’s not that accurate. For Eric’s parts, I listened to his isolated tracks on Youtube. He plays a lot of rhythm stuff that was mixed out in the final mix. The guitar effects were added later. Eric said the Beatles put his guitar track through a “Wobbler”. That’s a technical term for flanging. I’m pretty sure that Abbey Road Sound Engineers invented flanging and ADT (Artificial Double Tracking).
So I worked it out from memory, by ear, tabs, and Youtube. And Thank You for all of your comments Garry. I think I’ve mentioned before that you were the first member to welcome me to AM.
Stay Well Garry,
Ralph
Eric’s guitar parts start at 9:40.

Nicely done Ralph. You pretty much covered every lick from the original. Your soft touch and ‘not so distorted’ tone really accentuated every note that needed clear articulation and projection. I want to hear some Michael Stanley. Didn’t you share some already? I saw him once I think in St. Louis MO back in the day. Job well done Ralph.

Thank You John. One of the greatest chord progressions ever. I’d love to do some Michael Stanley, Cleveland’s Own Hometown Legend. I remember a time when you couldn’t turn on a Cleveland Radio Station without hearing MSB. His talent is definitely missed.
I’m sure you remember this one, with the great Clarence Clemons killing the sax.
The verse starting at 2:53 is some of the best Rock Lyrics ever.Thank You for your comments Neighbor,

About as close to the original as you are going to get.
I’m impressed.
Your lead guitar work on this is outstanding Ralph. There are no hiding places here, so even a tiny drop would sound obvious but you held it all together.
Can I ask – where did you get the backing track for this?
Best,
Liam.

Needless to say, your playing is excellent as always Ralph and I really enjoyed listening. There is something you do that mystifies me and I would be curious about your answer to this.
How did you transpose your part over this song? I mean, I would not expect versions of this song without the guitar part. So, how do you remove the guitar part and put your own in there ? Sorry if this is a really stupid question but I still have so much to learn about recording techniques.
Also, you list all of those wonderful guitars of yours. Another stupid question: Did you play all of those on this ?

Thank You Geoff. See my reply to Liam about the backing track. That site has customizable tracks that you can delete any tracks you want. Very cool site.
And yes, I played 3 of my guitars on this, although not at the same time. LOL
I recorded parts of the song (the solos and acoustic) with a microphone, and recorded the lead fills with an amp modeler. My Wife… well you understand. I’d like to record with a real amp all of the time, but sometimes it’s not well appreciated.Check out Karaoke-Versions.com They may have something you like on there.
As always, Thanks for your comments and questions,

Now that is interesting. So you are effectively doing Karoake with your guitar then 🙂 I like it.
Also cool that you used all three guitars. I have just learned how to route my amp through my recording interface so, no need for amp modelling, I can still use my beloved Vox Amp with the BOSS multi-effects pedal. No more complaints from my wife recording electriec anymore – I used to do it all with a Mic but I only need the mic for recording my claasical stuff now. I am guessing you know how to record through your interface with a real Amp because you are a recording Guru.
I will check out Karaoke-Versions.com.
