Im pretty new to guitar & would like to know some good tips for practicing.

I try to practice for at least an hour a day.

I usually start by running through some scales with a metronome to get my fingers warmed up. Next I try to focus on different chord progressions, especially ones that are difficult for me, and I try to learn at least two new chords by shape and name each week. Next I try to learn songs that I’m familiar with and that are fun to play.

What else can I do to make my practice more effective? I just got the premium access on here & playing along with the jam tracks has been a great way to keep things exciting. Any other suggestions?

        Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. You’ve come to the right place for sharing anything related to guitar. Everyone here is really helpful & friendly & Brian is a great teacher. You seem to be doing everything that I can think of. I guess if there is anything that wasn’t mentioned is get to know the notes on your fretboard & play with other players as often as you can. It’s really fun & very educational too.
You will go through plateau’s where you feel you are not improving, don’t worry it happens to everyone. Don’t give up, just keep up the practice. Cheers

Spider exercises have been a great help to me. Basically they train the fingers of your fretting hand to work independently which is particularly useful for the ring finger and pinky.

There are several examples on Utube. I do the ones for the fretting hand only. You can then sit and watch TV at the same time as it can get a bit boring.

It will build up strength and speed in your fretting hand. It also helps when fingering odd shaped chords as your fingers go where your brain is telling them.

            Hope this is useful

There are quite a few guitar sites but this one seems like one of the best so i joined, i had my guitar about 8 weeks now and i would be better
if i practiced more often, i get about 1/2 hr per day, i find if i leave it alone for 2-3 days then go back to it, i get better understanding and my
              results are better.

I havn’t done my scales yet apart from the e minor one which i really like and do practice and although i’m almost a complete novice and
havn’t mastered a complete song yet, only parts of one i am thoroughly enjoying the experience and learning curve.

I’d say the best advice I can offer is to find something that doesn’t feel like practice. Try putting on your favorite CD (Eric Clapton Journeyman is a great one for me), and grab your guitar and just try to play along. Pretend you’re the guest guitarist on the album and it’s your job to compliment the artist by coming up with something that sounds interesting. I can get lost doing this and it never feels like practice, but it really is I suppose.
