Hello to all,
Sometimes we get inspired and its good to know a few chords and licks. This is a little composition that was inspired by Rob Lewis’s film Lunar Tribute.
I recorded it using a Boss eBand JS10. Just a simple drum track with eight or so guitar overdubs, Just two chords the whole time. Any and all critiques welcome. Thanks !

Very impressive, John! Great soloing and what a perfect sound out of those guitars! And the mix was very professional too!

John, there’s a future for you in the movie soundtrack biz. I thought your bends and vibrato were outstanding. Did you do all the guitar overdubs with the one PRS?

That was something special, always amazes me the talent on this forum. I did have to lower the bass in the equaliser as it was vibrating my taxi to bits..

Hey guys, thanks for these comments. For Billy and all: I can sympathise with your speakers re the bass level. I put down a bass track and although I do own a bass I have no idea about playing it. What I did was simply bang out root notes over the two chords Em-Am. The trouble with the bass overloading is that I forgot to lower the level for it. It seems guitar level can be higher. Also I recorded all the takes with my Boss eBand and used studio monitors which seem to be able to handle any level of bass with no problem. So please do lower your bass setting ! I am certainly no pro but just a 62 year young having no end of fun. First I laid down a little semi strummed trac over the drums. Next came the arpeggiated chords Em-Am. Then with the drum rolls I hit an A power chord with some gusto. Next was a layer or two of beep beep sounds made by playing two notes way up the neck. I was trying to imitate warning lights flashing in the Lunar Module. By some unexplained miracle I managed the entire solo in a single take ! For the sound of that I used a patch in the Boss eBand called Deep Ambience and dimed all the settings to make it scream ! In the second half I added a screaming E note by bending up a tone on the 2nd string 15th fret to give a falling from space (back to earth) effect.. That was more or less it ! Guys believe me, I aint no musician and if I could do it then I’m sure any of you players could. I am thinking the whole exercise is sort of a Happy Accident.
Cheers to all.
If anyone is interested please check out the “Lunar Tribute”website where you can watch the short movie trailer. My little composition is simply INSPIRED By the film and is IN NO WAY anything to do with it. -

That’s excellent John! I would include that in my iTunes library under the “chill” genre. I’ve never heard of the Boss eBand JS10, so the first thing I’m going to do is read about that.

So, did you actually record all the tracks into the eBand, or did you just play through the eBand and record in a DAW? I just read a little about the eBand, and there was no mention of being able to record multiple tracks.

Hi Sunjamr, As I said very amateur here. I brought up the drum track from the rhythm library in the eBand and recorded my first layer over it. Saved that track then restarted it with record and put down the next layer. Each time I saved with protect mode activated which means that each layer has its own recording number. This allowed me to go back and redo if I was not happy. In the end I had about 8 guitar tracks, 1 bass, and 4 voice tracks, that makes 13 so N0.13 is the one you are hearing. Probably the worst way to record anything but I guess it works for me. There is no mixing done since each track is cumulative. I need to learn garage band for a more normal method !! I practically never use an amp as I get all the sounds I need out of the eBand. Its a great little toy and routed through studio monitors it sounds great. I hope you and others can make sense of this 😉

Before anything else John …. Welcome to Active Melody, First post!!I can’t think of anyone here who made such an impressive debut.
The whole project is so interesting, from the original inspiration through to the building of layers with successive overdubs. It is so beautifully done. Brilliant!
Looking forward to hearing more from you and don’t forget to include production info.

Thank you Martyn, I have been a member for a few years but never been on the forum. Inspiration does come and go, I guess we just have to answer the call (fight laziness in my case) and see what can happen. Watching my Son’s film about this great American hero in New York last October was the proudest day of my 62 years down here on earth. Thanks again for the kind words & welcome. John

You know John, I nearly asked about the similar surname! I really enjoyed the extract and thought that if I could, I’d watch the whole thing someday. Proud Dad indeed.

Hi there and welcome to the site and forum.
Always nice to hear what members here come up with. Glad you posted your musical talent. Enjoyed listening. The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

That was very cool! Amazing at the originality you have on display here. Almost, no- very Pink Floyd-ish!
