I finally got my recording DAW to work and got some pictures. Here’s a little write-up on it too.
My new model Gibson Les Paul Studio , Modern weight relief model.
OK, let me give you a little break down on my new Les Paul Studio.
It has a body, “a very sexy one actually” made with and it’s design of Mahogany, but they say it is “Modern” weight relief. BS. Sucker ain’t light at all. Got to sit down and play this baby.
The top is of maple wood “American” grown, hmm…? Also, this hasn’t changed since day 1. I just thought I’d throw this in for laughs since we all know where the Gibson cases are made in, right. Well, if you don’t know, ask around. Hint, not in America.
Now, let me say something about the fine and easy to play fingerboard with Trapezoid Inlays, dang, what the heck is that. OK, I just threw that in to keep your attention on this post. If you need to, get yourself another cup of coffee, or if like me, another beer. Yes, the fingerboard, well it turns out to be “Granadillo”. Yikes, a new word in my vocabulary. The “Granadillo” wood has a slight reddish look to it. And beautiful to look at. OK, so what. How does it feel while them finger tips are dancing all over it? Man, Gibson scored a “BIG” ten on this one. One of the finest fretboards I feel that Gibson has added to its collection of the Les Paul. It took a little of getting used to, but really its a very easy to play over fretboard.
OK, now get let’s down to business, Gibson business that is. The hardware: Chrome Tune-o-Matic, hmm… sounds a bit of history there. OK, cool with me. The vintage style Tuners, well, what happens if your grandfather isn’t with you and you ask, what the heck are them….
Hey, man, now it’s time to get down and boogie on the electronics, you know the pickups. OK, it’s packed with the 490/498T, Push/Pull Coil Taps. Sorry guys on this one, just don’t have lowdown on this tech stuff, but it’s like single coil and the hums that one can switch on and off too. Pretty cool, but a bit confusing to figure out in the beginning, heck even the sales person didn’t know which one is which. Hey Gibson, what happen on the treble, lacks the punch, sorry, but that is how my ears hear it. Maybe if I had a Marshall amp, it might be different, but actually on my Vox Pathfinder 10, I do like the more bassy tone that these pickups deliver. A real mellow and rich tone to my ears.
OK, let’s move on to the plastics: My first thought was, “Chinese made”, like what company in America wants to stay in business making these, let’s say 100, for maybe 20 cents. OK, maybe I’m pushing it, but.. they’re a bit flimsy. The speed Knobs, wow, nice name, right! So 21st century lingo here. I give them a well balance passing on them, not bad at all. I like the feel of them and they are “black”.OK, now the case, yep, made in Canada, hey man, where is our man “Trump” now.
Overall, a workhorse of a fine guitar. Gibson gets a 10 on this one. Hey, Gibson, if you are reading this, I’m in Japan where I bought it. Please send me a set of Gibson strings, I can’t afford them now.

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Great write up on your new Gibson LP Studio, I do like the red tinge of the fret board, bonny guitar..
Only thing that was missing is a soundbite of how it all sounds.
Wish you health to enjoy...Billy..

Billy, I got to say, its got the Gibson magic. Really a beautiful tone coming out of my Vox amp. And I do like it on the bassy side.

You know I never thought I’d buy another black guitar, but this one was hanging on the wall and it looked so pretty, so I bought it. LOL And, yes, black guitar get all smudgy very quickly. On the pickups, I hope someone tunes in and helps us out on it. The push down and pull up is a bit confusing, but I like the tone no matter if down up or whatever. LOL

Pretty cool! Was it a lot more expensive than buying it in the US? For me, I can fly to the US, buy a new guitar, and fly back to New Zealand with it and the total cost is much cheaper than buying it from a New Zealand store.

Pete, nice guitar, hope you also got a good deal on it so you can afford new strings LOL.
I always thought that on the push/pull pots, pulling up on the bridge pickup volume pot split the bridge humbucker to a single coil, and similar for splitting the neck pickup (pulling up on neck pup volume knob). Last guitar I had that featured the coil split option was an Epi Les Paul.
I’m with Billy, I love that fretboard wood, very nice!

Mark your right with the push pull on the Pots it’s definitely the two volume buttons to split but I think at a lower volume the difference is really subtle

So we finally get to see and even hear your new guitar, Pete! Congrats and have lots of fun with it. Although I don’t want to get indiscreet, I am also curious about the Japan premium on a Gibson LP. I still remember some prices in Tokyo 10+ years ago and hope you didn’t have to pay those (although I am quite certain that Tokyo prices are different to where you are). Anyway, thanks for sharing your new Black Beauty with us!

Thank you sir.
The fretboard was a bit hard to get used to, but now it is easy on the fingertips. I thought the frets were a bit high. Maybe that is why.

Thanks, Bryce. I’m really enjoying the playability of it. The neck as I had mention feels really nice. And the tone, just beautiful.

Thanks Mark for your kind comments. It would be nice if Gibson sent me some strings. Maybe I should post this on the Les Paul forum. Hmm I’ll have to check into it.

Hi Tim
Thank you very much for you kind comment. Brian owns a Studio one also and when I saw this one hanging on the wall and saw it was black, I said, no way. But… the sales person came up to me and asked me if I wanted to play it, I asked him if he would play it first. The tone of the guitar hit me with that childhood magic of the Gibsons I heard at my Uncle’s tavern. Kids were allowed in back some 55 years ago. Glad to hear you spotted the bassy tone also, that is what sold it.The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

Hey Trem
Yeah, I finally got around to do a quick something on it. Haven’t played and electric in 2 years so I know I was , oh well, here’s a link in japanese website, gives you an indication of about what I paid for it.
http://www.yodobashi.com/product/100000001003265577/?lpoword=%E3%82%AE%E3%83%96%E3%82%BD%E3%83%B3+LP+StudioThe Black Beauty has really bonded well with me. Currently though, I’m on my scooter and seeing the countryside and when I come back in, I have it in my hands. I’m going to color my words a bit and write a song, so stay tune.
Again thanks for your comment.

Hi Don, and thanks. I’m very very pleased with this Gibson. The guitar really connects with what’s in my musical expressions. I’m hoping now I can get back into song writing again with it.

HankYep. And another good acronym to know when you’re hanging out in a guitar forum: GAS — Gear Acquisition Syndrome. There’s no cure for it, I’m afraid…
