I’ve been exploring the world of funk guitar lately with a goal of learning the chords, licks, and rhythms. From what I’ve seen, this guy – Cory Wong – is currently the best overall funk guitarist out there. In a nutshell, he plays rhythm guitar as the lead. There are some take-home lessons for all of us in this discussion. Watch as he explains what he’s doing:

Notice his thumb, how he holds the pick. I’ve notice that with many strong rhythm players.
Loosen and relax the wrist, that pretty much sums it up.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Yeh, that blew me away. It’s the exact opposite of what’s recommended in all the “how to hold a pick” videos on Youtube. Yet look at the accuracy and control he has.

That’s the one limp wrist! I watched the video of him in the weight loss thread and was amazed. He has certainly developed a unique style.
