Looking for first electric telecaster. Prefer american made. Im not pro so it doesn’t have to be the best. Just want something classic, well made that would be similar to, or better than what was played in the late 70s. There are so many variations it gets confusing. Ok with new or used. prefer something around $1000. Any suggestions.

Hi Bryan, not sure if you’ve seen my previous post. The Sire T7 Larry Carlton is my first Tele so can’t really compare but I can only recommend it. Looks very classy, sounds great, roasted maple neck is very comfortable, locking tuners. P ups are very good but easy to replace if you fancy something else. There is a very thorough review here:

The only thing, they’re not very easy to find.

          Good luck with your search!

Hey Bryan, If you go to reverb.com and type in just Telecaster you can scroll right arrow just to see the many variations out there. Anything that has “player” in the title is from the Ensenada factory in Mexico. If you want an American made guitar from the Corona, Ca. factory you can check out the American special, amer standard, professional, elite etc. After you narrow it down to one of those things like neck radius, maple or rosewood fingerboard, fret size, 3 brass or 6 steel saddles, alder vs ash body etc. So with a lot to choose from its always best to drive one before you buy. Happy hunting!

Hey Bryan, as Enrico said, those Sire guitars are getting some great reviews, however, there seems to be back order on a lot of them. If you do some hunting around on FB Market Place, or even Craigslist, I have no doubt that you can get a used American Standard for a bit over/under 1000. More over to be realistic. A new American Performer is around 14-1500. I picked up a mint American Professional “used” for 1400. I would definitely suggest going used. All of the guys who I’ve dealt with are players who care alot about their gear, and have the guitar pretty well set up. Plus Fender can be a bit funky inre to brand new out of the box. IMHO it’s best to demo it, and a “worn guitar” feels great!!
              Good luck.

My dark sunburst American Standard from around 1998 is pretty good. It is one of the Parsons-Green B-Bender OEM Teles. The standard pickups were a little less hot than I thought they should be to get the pedal steel sound so I put Texas Tele pickups in it, much better. I also put a nice repro tortoise shell pick guard on it, excellent! At the time I was trying to get it to look like Clarence White’s guitar.

It’s a very solid build, beautifully finished, good hardware. The basic Am. Stds from that era go for around 1K and up, I’d certainly get another one.

BUT… you should try to play a few Telecasters. For example, you might want a PAF pickup Tele (I do since I heard Brian’s Danocaster on here), or an American Nashville 3 pickup job, with a Strat pickup in the middle. Only you can say for sure.

                That is all I know.

Tough to get American made for $1k.
I have a Player Series Tele that I upgraded the pots and witch on and it is my favorite guitar. Got it used for $500 and wiring harness for $100.
I’ve played a few Pro series at shops that go for 1500 or more and can’t say they play 300% better than mine.

I just bought a Michael Kelly 1953 Tele guitar from Sam Ash – they were having a close out and I’ve got under $300 in it. I posted it a couple of weeks ago in Discuss Your Gear.
You can likely talk them down on this one since its a restock or ask if they will be posting anymore with the deal that I got

Its made in Indonesia, build quality is really good and it has a 4 way switch in it

I have an American Deluxe Ash Tele which I bought new in 2015. I have yet to find another electric guitar which has such a comfortable neck. Overall, I could not be happier with it.
