I’m thinking about getting some new studio monitors without breaking the bank. Just wondering what everyone is using and their thoughts. Thanks.

Ivan, I bought cheap pair of mackie 3 in for 80 bucks on amazon..now I’m looking to buy a basic beginner audio interface to try getting quality recordings to showcase my practicing here lol.. so far the Yamaha thr10C interface amp with the Steinburg software did not go well and didn’t yet have luck with that so I’m researching now my options for my desktop windows computer the best start up kit
mackies sells beginner startup kit bundles with these speakers and interface mic earphones..Maybe that is something to consider..gl.. truthfully,i much more excited to just practice!lol

Ivan,
My understanding of good monitors is that they are not supposed to colour the sound of the recording, ie. what you recorded is exactly what you hear through the monitor. The down side of that is that they could sound sort of flat when used as computer speakers. I am using Rokit 8’s with a subwoofer unit. I was previously using Rokit 6’s and I don’t hear a huge difference. I think my recordings play back a little darker than what I hear in my room but they are pretty good doubling as computer speakers. I don’t typically play through my DAW into the monitors but you could if you’re set up well with very little latency.

Thanks guys. I don’t play through my monitors (powered speakers really). I use them mainly as computer speakers and to listen to playback of my recordings. I’ve looked at both Mackie and Rokit monitors and they could be what I’m looking for. They’ll go on my potential list. Thanks for the feedback guys….

I bought a set of Blue Sky speakers for the computer a few years ago, a little pricey, but I’ve never regretted it. If you’re on a tight budget Klipsch are a lot of bang for the buck.

Most people I know of use KRK Rokit 5 or 6. I have Rokit 6. I like them because the KRK label lights up when you turn them on, and the speaker cones are yellow, so they look very cool. Oh, and they accept all kinds of inputs and sound almost as good as my guitar amps.

Ivan, I always appreciate Steve’s advice,, agree but as a starter set these MACKIES 3 IN WERE 80 USA AND FINE FOR WHAT i CARE TO DO SO FAR AS A BEGINNER,, Quite frankly,, I play low volume when learning practicing 278 country is so fun.. This is going to be my October entry I think! It is too fun even with nothing but an amp and guitar.. I like training along with the soundslice tempo/metronome off Brian’s count and the tempo is so fun as I play it faster! yeah , enjoy the country stuff here at Active Melody lately! As for Monitors, if as you say on a bugit.. the mackies are fine for under a hundred a pair and they have all the inputs etc.

Thanks again John. Yeah I appreciate everybody’s input here too…thats why I ask. This is a great place to ask where everyone shares a common interest…doesn’t get any better.
Like you I play at lower volumes myself but it’s always through my amp.
I mainly use the monitors for playing tracks that I jam over and listening to my recording playback for recording quality. So although I don’t want to break the bank I’m still looking for a set that will sound good in the mix both in real time and digitally recorded. So I’m going to be a little flexible with the bottom line. -

Hey there,
I bought recently Mackie CR4BT (https://www.amazon.com/Mackie-CR4BT-Bluetooth-Ready-Multimedia-Monitor/dp/B015U623GW)I really like that I can connect to them with bluetooth. They are connected to my main computer, but when I work on a laptop, I can. Or from a phone.
They seem very well built.

Hi Ivan,
Been happy with my Rokit 5 speakers. Sound great at lower volume. Great connectivity for a small studio. I use mine with Reaper which I run over a laptop. My I/O is a Behringer U-phoria 1820. Overkill for what I do inputwise but the price was right.
Good luck with your choice!!
