I have developed arthritis in my little finger on my left hand. I sort of stopped playing because i can’t press down without pain. I started playing bass with 3 fingers. I can do that ok, but i don’t get the same juice as playing guitar. I saw Derick Trucks play slide and was blown away. I have started learning to play slide. I found a Youtube tutorial on a delta blues song by Brian and am starting to learn it. I can play slide because the little pressure on my little finger to play slide doesn’t cause pain.
I have seen instruction by some great slide players; Deric Trucks, Warren Haynes and Jonny winter, but they arae way above my current skill level I would like other relatively basic tutorials on playing slide, regular tuning as well ad open D.
I am grateful i am able to play again.

Hi Jimi Lee,
I feel your pain. After really overplaying recently I developed neurological symptoms in my fretting hand (carpal tunnel syndrome) and it scared the daylights out of me thinking it might interfere with my rekindled passion for guitar. It’s great to hear you have found a way to still enjoy your hobby.
It reminds me of some famous guitarists, like “Django”Rheinhardt, a famous European jazz musician who had a successful career after the 3rd and 4th fingers of his fretting hand were paralyzed by a burn and Toni Iommi, of Black Sabbath fame who lost the tips of his 2nd and 3rd fingers in a shop accident pre-Black Sabbath. Toni wore special metal thimbles over his fingers that became part of his signature sound.

A real curse this arthritis. I think i have something like that in my left index finger and now some minor pain is starting to develop in my left middle finger. Indeed a scary thought that this might impact my guitar playing. Or worse, bring it to a grinding halt. I also know Django Reinhardt’s story, but that doesn’t really comfort me. I hope it helps that I keep my hands warm and don’t press too hard on the strings. Because of this I abandoned my Stratocaster and rarely play my acoustic.

I suppose for many years daily “Devil’s Claw” preventively. Can I highly recommend.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.
