Slack Key Guitar playing is Hawaiian Style music. It uses all kinds of Open Tunings also. One of the most popular is Open G, also known in Slack Key as Taro Patch Tuning. I started getting into guitar again around 2003. I had not really played for six or seven years. I decide to take some lessons. The teacher was cool, he asked what do you want to play. I say Blues/Jazz stuff. He said well there is much, much theory involved. He then asked, how do you like finger picking to start with. I am thinking oh no this is going to be bad. He had me pick up the book with a cd called Guitar Playing Hawaiian Style by Ozzie Kotani. At first I thaught this is going to be boring. While waiting for the book he starts showing me finger roles in an open tuning. I have to tell you I wish I would have taken an interest in this years sooner. It was a challenge to finger pick. No loud thrashing open e slide stuff. No lead playing trying to sound like something I had no idea about. After the book arrived I started in it. From very basic super slow Open G alternating bass stuff to faster up and down the neck finger picking playing all kinds of stuff from the third fret to the fifteenth fret or so. I got a few tunes down as I started improving. picking up banjo, which is in open tunings, and now on this site playing tunes as well as lead stuff. You don’t use a slide or flat bar at least in the book I have. Its fun easy to start with and will help with your guitar playing especially when doing odd fingerings. You will be surprised how much you gain from this . Give it a try. The first few songs are very easy, then it gets harder, but man it sounds so nice too.
FresnojohnsOpen G is 1 d, 2 b, 3 g, 4 d, 5 g, 6, d. Two d strings and two g strings. It is so sweet when you even strum it open.
