So far 13 people have expressed an interest in participating in the proposed “Second Verse Challenge”, and I suspect some others who have not recently logged onto the forum might also be interest. I have made a list of members who have expressed an interest (some said they aren’t ready just yet, but like the idea). I’m also starting a list of previously submitted posts that appear to qualify as Second Verse compositions, and I’ll watch for any future posts that may qualify.
So, if you develop a composition to extend any lesson, you can post it as “Second Verse EP___” under the forum heading “Showcase Your Playing” and I will log it in. After we have reached 10 participants, Bryce will make a sticky topic heading where the posts can be stored. The idea is that if some member really likes a certain lesson, they can look there to see if anyone has composed a Second Verse for it.
The criteria for this challenge are:
1) This is a challenge that you can do at your own pace, and post whenever you like.
2) The challenge is to choose any lesson you like and compose a “second verse”. Typically this will mean doubling the length of the lesson.
3) The aim is to come up with an actual composition, not just noodling-around improvisation. In other words, three days later you should be able to play it almost exactly the same.
4) If you choose an “in the style of an artist” lesson, try to study and incorporate some actual licks from the artist.
5) If you choose an “in the style of a genre” lesson, try to make the 2nd verse fit with the genre and sound like a continuation of Brian’s original composition.
6) If you choose a rhythm guitar lesson, try to create a solo that fits with it.
7) If you choose a lesson on solo guitar, try to extend the solo, keeping it in the same vein as the lesson.
8) The idea is that other members might like to duplicate what you’ve come up with, so if you make a video, try to set the camera angle so that other members can see your fingerwork fairly easily.
9) Post your composition as “Second Verse Challenge EP___” under the topic “Showcase Your Playing”.

I will try and submit something as well! I mean it’s basically what I do with all of Brian’s lessons in the end!

On a past open challenge, I did something similar to EP 141. This one (like many of Brian’s lessons) already have 2 distinct verses so instead of doubling what was there, I took the main rhythm part and used this as a chorus. I split Brian’s solos up and inserted a solo of my own composition after the 1zt original solo. I then followed this up with incorporating a western swing sliding triad that Brian did in another lesson, with a piano solo over this (piano was EZ Keys, not me!). I then put in Brian’s 2nd solo toward the end. All had the main chorus riffs played between all, except my own solo and piano solo. I have this composition attached here again.
This was a lot of fun putting this one together and it makes me think that you are on the right track here with another lesson challenge variety. To tweak this further, one could take one lesson and incorporate a solo or individual riffs from another lesson into this (combining 2 or more lessons into one). I know this was discussed be several folks at one point. It would be cool because you could transpose lessons from one key into another (something Brian emphasizes).
Sign me up… No clue when I’d be able to actually work on this, guitar playing time has been scarce for me but considering how much fun I had with the attached, I’d definitely be up for doing another at the very least.

Thanks for that Mark, I’ve added it to the list. That’s exactly what we’re after. I realize that some of Brian’s lessons already have 2 “verses”, so in that case you could add a 3rd and even a 4th verse. I’m just trying to keep it simple by calling this the Second Verse Challenge because it’s easier to remember than “Lesson Extension Challenge” or “Extended Lesson Challenge”. Many of the earlier lessons sound really cool, but are quite short. Those ones really do need a second verse, so I’m hoping some members will take them on.
As for joining two or more lessons together, I thought about that, since quite a few members have done that in the past. It’s true, you might get the experience of transposing a lesson and maybe changing the tempo, but I think the mission here is to encourage members to actually create something from scratch. Certainly that would include cutting and pasting licks that others have developed. In fact, I’ve often wondered if there even is such a thing as an original lick. I’ve often suspected that they were all invented years ago by the great blues masters who have passed on.

I agree Steve and moving forward from them I often think of the legacy licks that Scottie Moore and Cliff Gallup left us with.

Hi Steve, please count me in. However I am not prepared to post videos, yet. May be later in the year. Meanwhile, I Hope it is acceptable to post Soundcloud links for Second Verse Challenges.

I would think audio links (SoundCloud, mp3, etc) would be fine. It’s all I ever do, as I’m not set up at all for video myself…

Thanks Mark. I will follow the advice of a specialist of Second Verse! (I’ve always in mind your added verses to EP035: these are more claptonizing than clapton himself! I mean the Clapton of late sixties and the Cream concerts broadcast by the pirate station Radio Caroline!)

I appreciate the sentiment but trust me, no one will ever confuse me with Slow hand… 🙂

Wouldn’t it be better if a time frame was given and everyone worked on the same lesson,Say a Time frame of 6 months which gives two 2nd verse challenges each year, Chances are it could become a bit..er..stale if we are listening to submissions that we don’t know and have to go dig them out to compare the lesson and the verse added?.
