I can play a practice tune four times straight without messing it up, but for the life of me as soon as I press record somewhere in that riff I’m going to mess it up. any pointers out there?

It’s natural. Try inserting some blank space (in my DAW Mixcraft it is insert selected time). This will give you some time at the beginning to get settled before the backing track starts.

The red light syndrome is common to practically all of us.
This helped me. When I practice I have the camera running all the time so you get used to it being on and soon you just focus on the task at hand and concentrate on your playing.
I hope this helpsKen F

I’ll second this idea. If the camera is always running you’ll forget about it soon enough. If you make a mistake, don’t stop recording, just start again. You might give some indicator of “take two”, etc., so your best effort is easier to find later when editing.
It seems the pressure to make that one perfect take when the camera is rolling trips us all up. So, get rid of the pressure by allowing mistakes and just keep rolling along.

Thanks for your advice it make sense, to just let the good time (recording) roll, and in good time I’ll forget that it’s recording and finally get it right.

Gary,
Accept this as reality and look upon it with favor… That being said, if you play out in-front of people imagine this happening maybe 10% of the time. Because it does. Give you self space to recover with dignity and humility… Now as far as recording goes, I would record yourself for an extended period and take the part(s) that are error free. In other words edit. My two cents.JH

Just press record and keep playing, no matter how many times you fluff a piece once you have hit the record button don’t press stop.
I bet within an hour or so, you’ll do a fresh record and you’ll forget all about the piece being recorded letting you concentrate only on your playing...Billy..
