I picked up a Carvin C1644P 16 channel powered mixer off Craigslist for cheap. It has 4x 300 watt amps. One for each of the 4 speaker connections. Actually, there are a total of 8 speaker connections because each of the 4 speakon connectors is wired in parallel to a 1/4 jack to give me an option on cables. I know how to hook everything up to speakers and match required impedance, but what I don’t know is if everything has to be hooked up with a load on it. What if I just want to listen to 2 mains and leave my 2 monitors in the closet. Does there have to be a load on the 2 monitor speaker out connections to keep from burning out those amps? I have an amp configuration button that switches from main/main/monitor/monitor to monitor/monitor/monitor/monitor. The owner’s manual is available from the Carvin site, but it really doesn’t address using the mixer with only 1 or 2 speakers at a time.
Any help here would be appreciated.
got an answer back from Carvin’s customer service dept. (took 90 minutes, not bad) The solid state amps have no-load protection, so I can run the mixer with or without speakers. Cool. All but one of my amps are tube amps. I try to get the builder to add a dummy load when I remember. Just in case. I guess I’ll hook it up after guitar lessons this evening and see if it works.
