Hi. I’m playing the I-V-vi-IV chord progression with open (acoustic) guitar chords G, D, Em, C. I don’t trust my own judgment whatsoever to know if my voice is in key. For now, I’m just seeking a systematic approach with a phone app chromatic tuner. My phone app displays letters when I sing, but I don’t understand how to tell if the letter displayed on the app is a correct match (in key) for the guitar chords. How do I do that? Thanks.

Not an iota of an idea on how you would use such a thing, why dont you just record yourself playing and singing and then have a listen?.

Hahaha – that’s a pretty unique and funny way to use a tuning app. I hadn’t thought of that. But Billy is right – just just record yourself and have a listen. Or better yet: Go find a voice teacher in your town and sign up for weekly lessons. Often high school music teachers moonlight as voice teachers.

Meanwhile, just do a search on Youtube for “how to sing on key”.

Or you could be like most of us and just forget about it and learn to play guitar instead….

[SOLVED] For future reference: This question has now been answered by a professional musician who is great with music theory. The correct answer is that the app should match the individual triad notes that comprise the chord. In my case, when I’m playing the G chord, my voice should be showing up on the chromatic tuner as G, B, or D. When I’m playing a D chord, my voice should show up on the chromatic tuner as D, F#, or A. When I’m playing an Em chord, my voice should show up on the chromatic tuner as E, G, or B. When I’m playing a C chord, my voice should show up on the chromatic tuner as C, E, or G. Thanks for those other alternative ideas, sunjamr and Billy.
