Does anyone know if the pentatonic patterns can start on the 5th string and if so do they use the same pattern? Also, you obviously do this running out of strings so where do those notes get played? Thanks to Brian or anyone who has worked on this for any insight. MV
Hey Martin, it’s all relevant to the key that you’re in. So in the Blues Lead Guitar Course that I offer, I show 5 different patterns. Pattern 1 would start on the 5th fret IF you were playing in the key of A, if you were playing in the key of G, Pattern 1 would start on the 3rd fret, and so forth. That fret that you “start” on as you mention is what I call the “Root” fret.
I hope that helps!
Brian,
Sorry, didn’t explain myself well. I mean the root starting on the A string (what I call the 5th string probably erroneously) not the 5th fret. It’s playing the patterns starting with notes on the A string. thanks for any insight. MV
Martin, if you are asking about the minor pentatonic then I believe patterns three and four have their root notes on the fifth string. You can get the diagrams off the Internet.
