    Hi Active Melody Community,

We had such a great turn out on the EP054 group challenge I am going to make this a regular thing here on the forum.

I encourage members of all levels to participate. I think this is going to be a fun group activity for us to learn a lesson together and also learn from each other.

Here are the ground rules if you would like to participate:

    1. Post your video OR MP3 submission of you playing EP027 Acoustic Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson anytime between Friday, November 6th to Sunday, November 8th. (i.e. First Weekend in November 2015)

Please don’t submit earlier. I think it is fun to see everyone’s posts at once. This 4 week time period should give people enough time to practice and play with it. You can submit it as played and/or you can add some of your own licks/fills. I encourage all of you to come up with something to add if you can. It can be improvised or planned and practiced.

Submit individually in the “Showcase Your Playing” forum

    2. You can play this lesson at any tempo you would like.

    3. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by this lesson!!! Use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow AM members and share tips or tricks for this lesson that you think are useful.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts!

Oh man, what an irony. Just two days after I made a big point of being a PICK (as in PLECTRUM) guy in this forum, you choose a fingerstyle piece for the next challenge. I don’t really think I am ready for fingerstyle, but since I had so much fun with the last challenge and was looking forward to the next one, I will try my best. In other words, I am in. This is gonna be tough though…

      Hello Bryce,

I’m going to give it my best effort and try to get in on this one. Been crazy at our house the past couple of weeks. Had all new carpets installed, so my wife and I have been moving furniture for the past two weeks. House has been up side down. Not much guitar playing going on during all of it.

      Hi Bryce’
This lesson is really good and I’m somewhere in the middle; as it’s really cool either acoustic or electric, also watching lots of rugby world cup games LOL! Also a really good tune to reinforce 12 bar blues.

I have learned the slow progression, but it still needs work
The normal progression gives me problems on the transitions

Looking at the TAB, the time signature is 4/4 … However
the entry drum beat of the backing clip is cut time (2/2)

There are 24 measures, or bars written in the TAB to the turn around!!! ( I was expecting 12)
so counting in 2/2 makes the 24 measures fit 12 measures played in 4/4!!
SO… A 12-bar blues lead played over this progression in 4/4 would play at half-speed to harmonize if all were listening to the same drummer….

      Have I got this right???

This is an interesting progression when played alone, but I find it difficult to play even a simple blues lead over the progression. Nothing seems to sound right. It will be interesting to hear the submissions!!!!

Thank goodness, fingerstyle came much easier to me than feared. I feel quite adequate with the rhythm part. I practiced the first four bars perhaps a bit too much, because I wanted to come up with a few of my own licks this time and for those I needed to get the feel for the rhythm.I don’t know if they will qualify for licks, but I devised some variations and additions. I wanted to do that part in the beginning so I could then practice all at once. It was a lot of fun being musically creative, but now I am running a little behind. Transitions / chord changes need smoothing out and I havn’t played against the backing track once.

Hang in there guys! You can do it! Remember learning fingerstyle will make you a better all around player. That’s why it is called a challenge, right?

I can’t play with my fingernails. I’ve tried but I prefer the flesh. Plus my natural nails break too easy.

I have it recorded in several takes on my daughter’s iPad. Now I just need to get it into my mac, into iMovie, find the good (least bad) version, edit out all the rubbish and get it ready for upload. It is the first time I have ever recorded myself! I am not playing it with the backing track though – does that still count?

      Chris,
Everything counts at Active Melody. It’s a great first step to complete a musical idea and get it recorded on mp3 or video. It’s a great learning experience and everybody is cheering on your progress. I actually am just posting an mp3 this time. Had too much on the go to try to wrestle with the video aspect. Also, I was spoiled last time as my son produced my video complete with 2 camera perspective, kind of hard to top.

Hi John, I noticed the same thing. I guess everybody is busy with EP027 and hasn’t got time to post anymore.
I am still not quite able to play it fluently, so I am quite happy to have another week left. I hope I don’t need until the twelth hour before I get a decent recording done, but in light of my current workload it is a possibility I can’t rule out. But unless anything dramatic happens, a video from me is a given. I am quite content with my progress even though I am not yet where I want to be.
I also spent quite some time on experimenting with my own devised licks. Lots of fun, but time consuming. And quite challenging, but here I found tremendous help in watching EP016 last night. This might help all those who (like me) thought they need to change the key of the lick when the chord changes. It needs not! Bottom line of EP016: Keep your licks in one key throughout the whole piece! In the case of EP027 that’s A. To me that was total news and is going to make life much easier for me in the future (well, only in this respect of course).

Phil, your puns are the worst but, contrary to popular opinion, I do enjoy them. Trem, I just watched EP016. How cool was that. Brian is just chatting and throwing off these great licks at the same time and then anticipating the chord change, and no panic, throwing off another great lick. Great to have the example to aspire to.

Yep. You pretty much have free reign on these challenges. The challenge is to get you to learn a lesson in a specific time period. You can play it as is, expand on it, or take it in a different direction. It is really up to you. The most import part is you have fun and are learning guitar.

I like working on these challenge lessons with the group as you get to see many different renditions of the same piece. It really shows a individual player’s personality. Last challenge (EP054) I saw people doing a slow groove version and I thought,”Man did I miss the boat on that. I would have never thought to do a slow version.”

If you got a video, upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and post the link to the video in a new forum post in the Showcase your playing section. If you just have an audio file you can attach it to the forum post if it is under 5mb or you can upload to it Soundcloud and post a link to it in a forum post.

If none of this makes sense send me a private message or email and I will walk you through the process.
