I just got around to trying some pedals my wife bought me for Christmas and the fuzz is awesome, I plugged my compressor/sustain in and thought what a bunch of crap…it didn’t appear to do anything until I fiddled with the settings and compared the same piece of music both with and without the compressor/sustainer….now I doubt I will play without it lol
but now I come to the tube overdrive….what is it for? i’m not sure what I’m supposed to be hearing? is it for lead….single riffs etc?

Hi Neil,
The category of pedals called distortion has several components: overdrive, Fuzz, distortion, boost…and maybe some others. But each pedal is a way to distort your guitar sound, each has a different purpose and sound and they can be played together to achieve a Hendrix tone for example. IN my case I have a fuzz before an overdrive and I use that combination to achieve a specific tone. It isnt a matter of using one for lead or rhythm, it’s a matter of using and combining to achieve tones you like, independent of lead or rhythm. Here’s a video that can help you sort through, there are many on youtube that address the issue. Roberto

what I like about a distortion pedal, brings back my teenage years when I first picked up the guitar and bought one of them 6 dollar distortion pedal. It made me feel that I actually could play something, at least loud anyway. LOL
They really are fun to have. Start out at low level and gradually work yourself up to where the tone/distortion is in agreement with your ears and the drive/feel that you are trying to achieve in your style of playing.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete
