I like the new Forum layout, except for one thing: Click on the “New Posts: Last Day” and look at the order of the posts (remember what post is at the top of the list). Now go down to the last post, and add a comment like “Testing 1,2,3”. Now go back and click on “New Posts: Last Day” and see what’s at the top of the list….it’s the post you just commented on. So the list isn’t maintained in chronological order. It’s constantly re-shuffling, depending on what people are commenting on. Weird, but true. It seems that somewhere we should be able to see a list of posts in the order that they were posted, but I can’t find such a place. Does anyone know how to do that?

So “Freshness” does not mean “time and date posted”, it means “time and date when someone commented on it”. See what I mean? So if someone wanted to keep their post at the top of the list, all they would have to do is keep going back and adding a comment to it. As a scientific experiment, I will now try that.

OK, I’ver tried “Topics Freshness”, and I can send a post to the top of the list there just by posting a comment on it.

I guess “freshness’ refers to a latest post inside a topic. It appears that “Latest Topics” keeps the TOPICS in the chronological order regardless of new posts.

Steve, I like the specific category arrangement.. I can’t be sure yet how it will work but I like seeing it logging in where to go instead of everything being humped together as it was logging in before.. too many newbies coming and going.. perhaps this will help keep it more civilize here lol

Yay! Jola figured it out. The only way you can get a chronological list of posts is to go to “Latest Topics”. So if you want to see posts in the order they were posted, that is your only option.
Who cares, you might ask? Well when the Monthly Challenge posts begin to appear, that way you can listen to them in the order they were posted. More importantly, when you’ve got 50 people posting responses, it’s WAAAAY easier to keep track of which ones you’ve already listened to. Quite a few members have moaned about this problem in the past.
As for the New Posts categories, I could locate a post from 2 years ago, put a comment on it, and it would appear at the top of the list. I will now demonstrate….check the New Posts: Last Day category.

See what I mean? I just sent Bryce’s post from 3 years 4 months ago to the top of the New Posts: Last Day category, but now this one will be at the top, until the next person comments on some post.

Well, we now have many choices to view the Forum and although it is somewhat confusing at first, I think with time we can get used to it and take full advantage of all the options.
Steve, when viewing the challenge responses, I always go directly to Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions where they always appear in chronological order so it’s easy for me to track them.🎸JoLa

on most popular topics, I notice three year old posts,if I remember, weren’t these locked/closed threads?, think if we keep this thread active , it could change from black to red bold letters as a hot topic it will be designated under most popular topic, maybe with a blinking red light bulb perhaps? I think we should experiment and btw,, wish there was a hot topic thread,, maybe there is , I have no idea, All I know is many my posts aren’t getting responses,,lol

That’s what I’m talking about Steve. It’s my first post on making up a lead part (EP 280 -January) and I don’t think anyone will ever see it unless I comment on it myself and it goes to the top. So I guess basically I miss the old way of seeing the newest posts as soon as you click “Forum”

I’m just trying this new layout because the old one was actually causing some server performance issues – we have so many site members now 🙂 if this doesn’t work we can figure something else out. I do think the forum is a little faster

Brian, I for one like the things you’ve done. It’s got a lot of good facets to it. I just wanted you to hear me do my 3rds and 6ths as you told me to work on in your comment. LOL

I can say one thing, the site uploads much faster now. Before I thought it was because of my core i7 CPU LOL
Really, it uploads much faster.
Now if I can only get the : Notify me of follow-up replies via email to work, I’ll be fine. Hey Brian, can you do something about this ? And also the subscribe to button doesn’t work.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Hi, I haven’t read everyone’s replies and I have a feeling this may well have been addressed because it’s the first thing Sunjamr Steve mentioned in his post, “New Posts: Last Day” doesn’t refer to posts, it refers to replies. I think that should be changed.
I’d like very much for there to be a page (or a topic, a “place” in electronic terms) where posts are displayed exactly in the order they were posted, so the latest post, regardless of replies or lack of them, is always the first thing you see, going on down. That way I can be sure I haven’t missed anything (as it is, I have to scroll back through older posts to get to one that was posted late, late last night).
EDIT: I should have read first. JoLa discovered that “Latest topics” is what I’m looking for. Thanks JoLa!

I think the for me, and many of us, the problem is in semantics. To me, a “Post” is where a member chooses a Forum topic and starts a new conversation. When someone reads that post and comments on it, that is a “Comment”, not a “Post”. And topic means the same as subject, so a “Topic” should be the list of categories you see on the left hand side after clicking on “Forum”. So “Discuss Gear and Techniques” would be a Topic. Correct? Therefore the new heading “Latest Topics” actually means “Latest Posts”. And if you want to see Forum Posts in the order they were posted by our members, clicking on that is the ONLY way to do it. All the other new headings, regardless of their names, are in order of when they received a comment.
My question is: When you check into the Forum, do you mainly want to see a chronological list of what other members have commented on, or do you want to see a chronological list of what other members have posted? In 3 years, I’ve never gone straight to “Latest Comments”, because I’m more interest in “Latest Posts”. If you are the same, then you should go straight to “Latest Topics”, which is actually a list of “Latest Posts” in chronological order.

Yes, my main problem was I was looking for Posts and found it in Topics, so I think the solution JoLa suggested is right; make “Latest topics” first and prominent—or even better, the default view.
The Forum does move/draw faster, and that’s a great feeling.

Steve, I agree with you. Semantics here are confusing. I think the most intuitive and important way to view the Forum would be – as you say – Latest Topics in the order in which they were posted. So Latest Topics should be the first choice on top and stand out to everyone coming to the Forum. Or even better yet, it would be the default way of viewing the Forum, kind of like it was before. And then every other search should be just optional (less prominent) for those who want to explore more.

I am practicing more these days anyway, but my thoughts about the new forum topics is pretty much the same as Sunjamr Steve, and suggest a more consolidated category of topics.. too many and seems it could have us drifting off looking for recent discussions. I am suggesting do away with “popular topics” seems they are way history to be popular anyway,, perhaps “HOT TOPICS”.. and the “my topics” anything with “my” isn’t really mine if it’s data based hahaha anyway, “todays posts” and “older posts” and “monthly challenges” in addition with the old forum” would suite me.. what ever you decide is your business but I think a more simplified forum directory would be better suited especially for newbies.

Billy once said it could be “Gremlins”.. they are notorious for most of what we percieve as chronological disorder! But I understand what you mean!
