Being a die hard Jimi fan I really enjoyed this interview. A lot of it spans the period from 1960-64 after Jimi and Billy were discharged from the air force until Jimi went off to New York and was discovered by Chas Chandler. I never knew that Jimi was centered in Nashville, earning a living in the local clubs and from there did his gigs on the Chitlin’ circuit. My favourite story was Billy describing how Jimi was never without a guitar, even playing as they walked down the street or took in a movie in a theater. Billy estimated that Jimi put in 25 years worth of guitar playing in five years. Great stories about the Woodstock and Band of Gypsies New Year ’69 shows, also. Billy seems like quite a gentleman and probably one of Jimi’s closest friends. Enjoy, all you Hendrix fans.

Interesting recollections John, Billy clearly enjoyed telling those stories. I remember first hearing Jimi Hendrix in the late 60’s and I wondered where his structure was, he seemed to play at random with no musical framework evident, it later dawned on us, he was way out in front of us all musically.

An int resting insight thanks for posting Jon. I didn’t know most any of that at all. I missed seeing him on the isle of wight a friend of mine had a dingy and was going to sail over but the weather was getting windy and I chickened out he went and sailed back the rest was history. Band of Gypsies was the album that i really got into along with so many others. such a shame that so many of these talented folk fell victim to drugs. one wonders if he was still alive and playing where he would have taken his music, he was so way out.

Thanks for posting John. Wonderful to hear the fond recollections of someone who was there and was a part of Jimi’s development.
