Hi
On my recent holidays I decided to learn a short Drop D fingerstyle micro lesson with my acoustic guitar.
I know that the percussive rhythm should be done with the fingertips rather than with the palm of the right hand. I just found it easier this way. When I watched the video I realised that my right hand is acting a bit stiff.
It’s the first time I recorded with a mic thru my focusrite interface, without an amp inbetween.Denise

Loved it Denise, I suppose it doesn’t matter which part of you is providing the percussive bit, as long as it works. I find that melody quite haunting and posted it myself end of last year.

That is absolutely beautiful, Denise – wonderful tone and recording! Loved it 👍🎶
I don’t subscribe to any fixed idea of how things should be played – what works for one person may not work for another! You’ve seen my thumb slaps that I use, but that’s simply what works for me. As long as it sounds right for you and you’re enjoying playing it, surely that’s all that matters!
For what it’s worth, your percussive rhythm sounded excellent – I really mean that – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it 😘
Best wishes 😎

Excellent playing Denise! As other have said, no matter the personal technique, what matters is the result, and in this case it sounds perfect to me! The microphone with the audio interface captured perfectly the natural authentic beautiful tone of your gorgeous Martin!

As we all know, if it sounds good, it is good. And that sounds mostly perfect. A few dud hits, but in general I think you were hitting the strings with your palm + fingernails. It’s the fingernails that give you the sharp slapfret sound. And you are doing it exactly how I and many other guitarists do it. BTW, I am shocked to see you not playing your old friend Chetty.

Really well played Denise. Yes, like the others, if it works for you then all good. The main thing is it sounds percussive and that’s the goal! Great to see you mix it up with an acoustic and I thought the sound quality was crystal clear. Thanks for sharing. All the best!

Hi Denise, I have to say, you get a very nice clear sound playing your Martin finger style. As always you sound really good.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with using the palm to get a percussive sound – they do that in flamenco all the time. Whatever works is quite good enough and I doubt that I would do it any differently.
So, is this the first time you have Mic’d up your guitar directly ? Took me a long time to figure out the best position for the Mic and I think I am still learning that. It looks like you place the Mic closer to the sound hole than I do but your position it below the treble strings – I am guessing that is how you avoid sounding too Bassy. Nice recording too.

Hi Denise, great sound and clean on the time fingerstyle performance! D Drop is always a challenge since it forces to rethink the E string and the chords positions that change….

Nicely played Denise. I thought the feel and percussive touch were perfect and your tone also sounds very nice with your micing setup.
It’s hard to play acoustic in a non accompaniment style and dampen unwanted noise and notes but you managed it all well. Nicely done!

That was spot on Denise what a great sound from that Martin.
The percussive chunk sounded just right you wouldn’t have known it was the palm if you didn’t mention it.
Your posts just keep getting better and your playing is coming along side it.
Best,
Liam.

Yep, you absolutely nailed it, Denise! Great sound and perfect execution! Your hand will relax more once the slapping technique becomes second nature to you. As much as I enjoy the mighty sound of your Chetty, I appreciate seeing your very fine Martin acoustic in action this time. Keep groovin’, sista! 😉

Hi Denise,
I love the Drop D piece you’ve shared here. What a lovely tone out of your guitar and smooth playing! I just took a look at that lesson and will return to it when time permits. I wrote a song a couple years ago using the Dropped D after a friend gave me a brief introduction to that technique. That tone/sound instantly grabbed my attention and I’ve loved it since. I need to finish the song I’d writen so I can try a few more in that style. The “drone” that’s produced is almost hypnotizing. Beautiful performance on that one.

Like you have been doing this style for years! Excellent Denise. I hope you had a fantabulous Holiday as well! Good drive and percussive attack on this piece. Reminds me of Gregg Allman on his Delta Blues “album”. Great job! Bob
