Hello AM friends…
For this month’s challenge, I chose to interpret a song by the exceptional guitarist J. Mayer, “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” in my own way. Over a drum track, I recorded, with my Fender Stratocaster (a must for J. Mayer), first two runs of the rhythm section in D minor, and then over that I recorded the lead section, using box no. 1 of the minor pentatonic scale for the first run, and box no. 2 of the same pentatonic scale for the second.
I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to your comments.
Best regards, everyone!Raffaele

What t he… This is awesome sounding lead guitar. You have to do a lesson on this for the members helping members. That’s just a sweet sounding musical piece. Perfect strat tone.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

I have to admit that of all the guitar players in the world, John Mayer is my favorite. He once said that he sat in his bedroom practicing his guitar skills for 8 years before he ever decided he needed to learn to sing. He has said many times that guitar is his first love. And I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone even attempt to play something by John Mayer here on the forum. Kudos to you for doing this. Well played!

Rafaele, nice choice of a song to play and well played. I agree with Steve. I saw John Mayer play and he is even better in person. I love his JM Trio recordings. Well done. Cheers. Pap

I’ve to confess I’m not familiar with this song (perhaps I’m the only one in the forum 😅) but your rendition is brilliant, Raffaele! Both the rhythm and lead parts are very nicely, flawlessly and soulfully played, so well articulated and with a great tone from your Strat! For sure you made me want to discover the original. Great work!

Mine, Guido, is a reworking of the original…which is something else entirely. But it’s very reminiscent of it…
Actually, I’ve tried to play the original in the past, but I think it would have been more interesting for the spirit and purpose of our family to propose my version…anyway, thanks to you and everyone else if you appreciated my attempt. -

I imagine you put a lot of effort into this, working out a melody, making it fit and making it sound like a well rounded piece.

Very nice, Raffaele, and a great song to use for the challenge.
I love strats and you really did capture some of that unique strat tone in your lead. Is that a custom shop strat? What model? It looks like it has vintage appointments such as the six screw bridge and vintage tuners as well as 21 frets. I see it also has some more modern features like truss rod adjustment on the headstock.
Do you know what the pick ups are? Also, I’m curious how you got your tone.

No, John, it’s not a custom shop…but you’ve noticed that it’s a vintage series, a ’70s Fender Mexico in Daphne Blue (purchased 15/20 years ago). However, I changed the pickups, I installed some excellent Peter Florence ST 60s, which are especially good for the blues sound. As for the sound, I haven’t used my amps for a few years now, but I use guitar software for PC: I have several, e.g., Guitar Rig, AmpliTube 4 and even 5, Tonex…but for a year now I’ve been using a software designed by young Italian engineers, called “Primo”, which is truly excellent, also because it’s very intuitive to use and choose sounds, unlike others like AmpliTube, which are very complex and also very memory-intensive. Excellent quality/price ratio. You won’t believe it, but all my recordings in these first 3 monthly challenges were made with this software, which I used with my various guitars.
Thank you all for appreciating my work, and I’d like to congratulate you again on the excellent work you’ve done this month.-

Actually, let me correct myself, John, it’s a Fender classic series, 50’s, made in Mexico…. they went out of production a few years ago, I think they’ve now been replaced by the Vintera series….. However, with the current pickups, the sound has been greatly improved….

What a beautiful song, I really like what you did here, Raffaele – your take on the song rather than a cover, I think that’s brilliant! Both rhythm and lead parts had a sweet tone, the lead was done nicely, great phrasing and tone. I like John Mayer, he’s a great guitar player and a cool guy.
