This is for “Coach Brian” at AM. The challenge is to create your own rhythm track and play a melody over it. This is a bluegrass jam standard. The origin is debatable. Brian Sutton recorded this in 2003 on his album “Bluegrass Guitar.”
I play it in Bb Major at 65 bpm because the melody notes are rapid fire and challenging for me. I got some good use out of my RC-5 looper.
Hope everyone is well.
Cheers. Pap

Such a pretty melody, I’ll have to check out Brian Sutton’s version. 65bpm sounds just right for me.

Great blue grass rendition, Pap! Lovely and melodic piece, very nicely played, both in the looped rhythm and the solo section. Flawless picking, great acoustic tone!

Excellent work pap. That was some melodic bluegrass, but it was in the major key of Bb. Too happy sounding to be minor.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Hey Pap, really great picking here! I find Bluegrass picking a real challenge, and here you just reel off line after line. Fantastic! You should be very happy with this!

Wow, Pap, that was so good.
You can really feel and hear how much heart and soul you put into it. It’s also very well played. It’s a pure joy to listen to you.
Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will be May/June
There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum
I look forward to meet you.

Nice one, Pap! I also love playing bluegrass, but it seems like I have to play it at about half speed, same as you. To be honest, I actually don’t like that high-speed frantic sound of some (most) bluegrass bands. There are a few bluegrass bands I’ve found that play slower style bluegrass, where you can actually pick out the individual notes. The Brothers Comatose and AJ Lee, for example, play a lot of slower stuff.

Ya I agree Steve. My wife and I went to watch a BG band from CO and they had one speed…turbo!!! What I took away from that was that dynamics in song choice is really important….especially in BG. Thanks for the comments. Pap

If I could play as fast as the great blue grass players, I would be so happy. I love the fast stuff. It shows how that style really takes some serious technical skills.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Excellent!!!!
I like how you played down the rhythm first with your looper and then played the Bluegrass lead.
The tempo was just right and you played with great accuracy and very clean.
That was one of your best subs I’ve heard.
Bluegrass is your style and your progress on it is amazing.More Blues!

What I really like about your post, Pap, is the lightness and cheerfulness of the melody. Whether it’s bluegrass or Irish influences, it doesn’t matter—it’s just great! Thank you

Hi Pap , nice use of the looper for the backing and a catchy melody on top , slowing that tempo down worked a treat making every note count .
Bluegrass is such a great style to get under your fingers .
This has to be your best to date … enjoyed it!Martin

Having just bought an RC-1, your use of the looper in real time has me inspired to just take the step to start with it. So smooth. Excellent rendition of this bluegrass arrangement, just flawless picking. Your progress here has been a joy to watch.

Such a pretty tune, Pap – well played, mixed, and recorded, and the tempo sounded plenty fast enough to me. – Mark 👍🎶😎

A man after my own heart. I love this style and you crushed it. You nailed this piece with a smooth rhythm and precise spot on lead. Sounded AMAZING. Your growth and improvement are very obvious. Keep up the great play. I think this style suits you and your development as both a rhythm and lead player. Congrats!John

This was a terrific fiddle tune performance. You would be more than welcome at any of the bluegrass jams I attend!
Of course the B-flat choice is kind of arbitrary since you are calling the tune and playing your own rhythm , but I’m sure you have observed that capo-ing (is that a word?) two or three frets up from the nut makes the picking a little easier.Have you tried Strum Machine? You can learn at 65 bpm and gradually ramp it up. (I looked up Daley’s Reel there. Note spelling,) It’s in B-flat.

I use strum machine almost every day. But I feel I have become too dependent on it. I am really trying to internalize the rhythm to the different songs and its challenging because they all sound very similar. I started working on Daley’s Reel about two months ago and I am slowly starting to get the melody under my fingers so….speed will come:) Thanks for the comments and good catch on the spelling.

Pap, that was so darn good! You have come a long way and are just killing it on that beautiful acoustic of yours!!!! I can totally picture you joining a bluegrass jam band somewhere near you! I love your determination and consistency, they surely pay off.

Nice choice and great playing Pap, I really enjoyed this. Is it just me or is it possible to here celtic connections with this form of bluegrass? Lovely anyhow – well played.
