Rocking out in the footsteps of my heroes! This took a fair amount of work over a couple of weeks. The hardest part was working out how to fill the solo at the end; nothing too original, I just grabbed some of my favourite licks and practiced them as best as I could in the time available. It was hard to make them fit in with the rhythm track and end at the same time as the rhythm track. After failing many times, I discovered the obvious – just stop playing, listen to where you are in the rhythm track and then start the next phrase. It doesn’t have to be one continuous solo!

Jonathan, that was really exceptional playing. Your experience comes through on this composition. Did you make the backing track? I like the arpegiation at the start and I was thinking….that will be tough to solo over…but no problem ….you mapped it out well. Your playing reflects what you have listened to ….although I have taken on the challenge of playing bluegrass, we have similar taste in music (Led Zeplin, Beatles etc…). Nice job here! Cheers. Pap

Wow – that was one impressive performance, Jonathan! I was actually surprised when you changed from the more gentle first section to the up-tempo second section. I wasn’t sure where you were going to take us 😂 – but both parts were played with precision. – Mark 👍🎶😎

Most excellent composition that defines what this challenge is all about. When it all speed up, that’s where you really started rocking out. the faster tempo is tough to keep up, but you did a fine job with it. You could definitely develop the song further to make it official putting a bass line and some drums in there. It sounds like you recorded the lead guitar part with your phone, cause it really picked up the foot switch. If you ran that through a DAW, you can eliminate that foot switch sound by muting the phones audio. But that’s only possible if you recorded the audio through a DAW as well as your phone. I like the creativity here.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

I recorded the lead guitar part using a microphone close to the speaker of my combo but the foot pedal was only a meter away from the mic and easily picked up the click of the switch. I agree that I should try to eliminate the foot switch sound next time. Perhaps I could place the two further apart or put a small baffle in front of the pedal. I’m too old to learn how to use a DAW apart from a little Audacity.

Great job Jonathan sounds good,I always liked just the guitar with a guitar loop, you get a true feel for the playing without drums and bass covering it up,nice job!

Awesome progressive rock Jonathan.
Super composition and played masterfully.
Reminded me a bit like the group Boston for some reason, probably the tone of your axe.AndréM

That was smashing Jonathan! I heard a hint of Led Zeppelin with a sprinkling of The Who in it!

I heard Jethro Tull everywhere within your composition. In addition to an outstanding composition, you did a great job on the mixing and recording. Way to shred, Jonathan!

Amazing rhythm and lead playing!
I heard some Who and the Beatles…and Jethro Tull. These were my heroes, too.
I would have liked to see you playing the rhythm guitar.
Great rock guitar sound.

Wow Jon
That was captivating and fun. Very Townsendesque. I admire your ability to remember the parts and of course, play over the corresponding parts. Truly a rock masterpiece and you presented well. Great stuff. Love your tone!John

Wow, what a result, Jonathan. That was a bit more than just playing along to a own rhythm track. I think you did an excellent job. It’s just awesome how the two guitars intertwine and blend together.
It reminded me of the interplay between multiple guitars in the band Wishbone Ash.
Fantastic work!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will be May/June
There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum
I look forward to meet you.

Jonathan,
That beautiful strat looks good on you.
I see you have two of the favourite albums of my youth on prominent display.
Kudos for being the first rock submission I’ve heard, great job, my favourite submission so far.
I initially thought I heard some elements of Rush but then I thought the Tommy rock opera might have been your biggest influence.
The click of the foot pedal only added to the authenticity. It’s like hearing the hum of single coils.

Catchy rock backing track , with an equally powerful lead , especially when you dig in a bit .
you put a lot of effort into this and it shows .
A fine performance throughout , I think you were quietly pleased at the end .Martin

Wow! This was brilliant. Great harmonies, great dynamics and a discernable melody that gave it real character and theatrical dynamics. I loved the way it changed voices several times without losing its overall feel. It mostly reminded me of the Who performing Tommy, which moved from theme to theme. Your coordination and timing between tracks was also very impressive. And most of all it was just moving music.

I loved the authenticity of this jam, Jonathan, and that included the different parts, the variety of phrases and tempos, the breaks in between, as well as the pedal clicks. It was as if you were playing a song live with a band and were doing all your guitar parts, not just the solo. Great opening hook to start with, the tension build-up and the melodies – I could swear it sounded like an old song I used to hear a lot. Amazing backing track, love how it went from a ballad to a heavy rock jam, one of your best work!

Really nice Jonathan! Just this weekend I was listening to Boston’s first album after not hearing it for many years. This captures a lot of the same vibe with the mix of guitars and tones. The driving rhythm with the picked melody are a great combination. Really enjoyed it!
