Well I picked a doozy of a piece to play this time. I had more challenges with this than you can shake a stick at. I had one version that really turned out good, but the audio did not record. That was disappointing, but I got another take today that is very acceptable and will have to do. Nothing constructed here, just off the cuff improve mixed with some of the original licks from the EP625 lesson. Enjoy all 4 minutes of it.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

That was a perfect lead over solid rhythm playing Michael. Definitely heard the Grateful Dead influence. Nice!

Bro you can play! I love that you got that Jerry vibe going on a Strat and a silver face Fender Amp. Sick note at :58 seconds! Sounds really cool, played flawlessly. I think this is lesson is based on a Grateful Dead tune called “Deal”. We should be neighbors. I think we might get into some trouble. Great job on this. Keep on rockin’ my friend.

Wow, Michael, your playing is always at a pro level and a pure joy for the ears! What can I say, just loved your phrasing, bends, vibrato, that pure Strat tone and enjoyed very much to listen to the whole performance!

oh I love your fat glassy Strat tone!! How do you record your guitar? Setup?
Absolute fantastic playing and I very much like your improv / jam over the lesson.
Great attack of strings, bends and vibratos! It can’t get better than that.
I enjoyed listening.More Blues!

Well done, Michael – you really captured the Garcia style! That was chock full of tasty licks, a first-class performance and played on my favorite kind of electric guitar.

Denise, the sound can be attributed to the venerable Tone King MKII plugin that I used. I finally pulled the trigger on it because the sound is so good and a lot cheaper than purchasing the real amp. I used it on both rhythm and lead with less reverb on the rhythm guitar, but the lead is mostly a clean tone on the neck pickup.
I also finished a second round of fret polishing that really makes all the bends really smooth and enjoyable to play.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Oh, Michael, I can really empathise with your comment about playing a great performance, only to find the recording went wonky. 🤬🤬!! Your submission, however, was great and really enjoyable. – Mark 👍🎶😎

Congratulations on taking on all those challenges- I think that’s the way it should be. Then when you overcome them and it turns out like this, you have something to be proud of.

Great job, Michael. You know how to improvise as you please based on chords. It’s never easy, and above all, it responds very much to the feelings and ideas of that precise moment. I often practice like this too: I send a backing track and jot down whatever comes to mind at that moment… and sometimes I get some pleasant surprises…
Very good, well done. -

Lovely playing Michael! Real swing to that plus I am bowled over by your tone – like John said above, there’s a coing together of tone/note at 58 seconds that really mnade me smile. Great stuff.
Which Fender amp is that?

It’s a late model twin reverb that I rewired with the black face mod. I wasn’t using that amp though because it is still in need of repairs to get rid of some nasty background noise that developed over the years. I’m thinking of buying a new eyelet board and doing a complete rewire of the circuitry. That will surely fix the issue with it.
The sound you are hearing is from the NDSP plugin for the Tone King MKII amp. That plugin does a fantastic job of recreating that particular amp that I wish I had for real. If I get my twin repaired, it should also sound spectacular as well, but that thing is too loud at the levels that it sounds the best at so would need a boost pedal of some kind to work at lower volume levels.
BTW, I was jamming out with you to your Back to the River song this morning. Such a simple motif, but so powerful in it’s musical communication. I could hear the vocal part singing out those words in your lead playing. Ain’t it great.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Great job on the improvising, Michael. I think you even changed scales so that was a real extra challenge.

Yep I agree with the other comments impressive improv throughout , that rolled along with a relaxed feel .
The Tone king plug in does sound nice and enhances that glassy strat tone .
That’s a bummer with your first recording, but you got there in the end.
Excellent submission, enjoyed it!Martin

Michael, really solid rhythm playing here. You also have a great ear for the chord changes. When you have those two things, improvising becomes a lot easier:) Nice submission….great tone and sound from the MII. Cheers. Pap

“I had one version that really turned out good, but the audio did not record.”
I can sooo relate to that, Michael! Trying to coordinate all gear during recording is always an additional challenge, isn’t it? So many things can go wrong 😆
Quite a jam – kudos for just off the cuff improvising like that! You call it acceptable but to me, it sounds incredible and pro-level! I have heard about the Tone King pedal, it does indeed give a great sound, I enjoyed listening to it!

Would never of guessed you had a challenging road as the result is top shelf. It rolled along capturing the Garcia vibe without a hitch. A joy of sound for the ears.

Hi Michael, this was fun! Love the kind of late 60s vibe, and you played the whole thing with a relaxed and mellow feel. Very melodic lead, recalling a theme again and again.
