I listened for the first time to this song several years ago (maybe 6 or 7?) when, from time to time, I was playing with a group of friends of a colleague of mine, who play bass and also sings. The mean singer of the group, a woman, proposed this song. I loved the song and I learned quite quickly the rhythm guitar accompaniment. But I was also fascinated by the slide guitar solo in the middle of the song, and I wanted desperately to learn it, but I really struggled to play it properly.
Very recently a bought my new beauty, a Fender PR-180 Resonator: I bought it because I always loved the sound of the resonators and meanly for playing slide with it (but I found out it’s excellent also for regular finger picking!). So I decided to finally learn properly that solo!
Then, I had also the crazy idea to try sing by my self the song: it’s the first song originally sang by a woman that I try to sing: it’s an interesting experiment, because especially in this case I had to try to sing softly (not very used to). I also tried to sing the second voice harmony. Not completely sure the result for the vocals is good enough, but I’m quite satisfied for the slide solo rendition (of course there is room for improvement!).
The resonator is tuned in standard tuning, so the hardest thing is to pluck the string you’re playing with one finger, and try to mute the near strings with the other fingers of the right hand (not sure it’s the correct technique, but it’s what I tried to do). Hope you’ll like it.Guido

Hi Guido, everything about your performance was so enjoyable, the voice, the vocal harmonies and the slide guitar solo. That sounded very stage-ready, just as it is.
Btw, Norah Jones is a particular favourite of mine.Richard

Well, Guido, I need to tell you something: I started your video before I began reading your comment. I immediately wondered what you were talking about when you said, “Not completely sure the result for the vocals is good enough” – are you kidding me 😲😲!!
It was truly wonderful – seriously – and this was even before I heard your vocal harmony! I mean, Guido, come on my friend. Have more faith in your abilities, because they are superb 👍🎶😎

Thank you, Mark! I’m always very critical of my self and always think there’s room for improvement. But I’m really glad that you very much appreciated my rendition!

I don’t know the song, but it’s wonderful. Your interpretation is very soulful, including the vocals and especially the bottleneck part is really perfect. Great!

Wonderful, Guido. Congratulations on the resonator, it’s a whole new set of skills to challenge yourself with and a beautiful addition to your repertoire.
For me the challenges include playing with fingers, a whole different type of muting and a completely different style of vibrato, intonation, not to mention a new linear way of seeing scales and open tunings. I’m opting for the slide on my little finger also, but when I fret with the other fingers the tendency is for the slide to clunk into the fretboard. The challenges never end.

Loved this one, Guido. Great job harmonizing with yourself and nice debut on your resonator. You’re getting a great sound with it. A skill not easily mastered.

Just wonderful Guido.
I know who Norah Jones is, but I’ve never heard of this one I’m ashamed to say.
Anyway your performance was top notch and I especially loved the resonator solo – no mean feat!
Well done sir and I hope to see more of these from you.
Liam.

I don’t know the song, but enjoyed your rendition! The vocals are nice and relaxed, yet confident. The slide is beautiful, (both in sound and looks!) and I thought the harmony blended nicely. Bravo!

Caro Guido 💗💓💞
Could this be your best performance so far???)at least as a one-man show and not as a collaboration )!You’ve chosen a very beautiful, soulful song and yes!even though N.Jones sings it,your voice fitted perfectly I think! your second voice harmony is so impressive and to be honest I tried to imitate it and sing along with you!!!(you definitely don’t need devices to do the harmonies for you😉😉😉)As about your new beauty!!!it’s a beauty indeed !I didn’t know you knew how to slide!!Multi-talented my dear friend ❤️ 💞💖💗💕❣️ -

Hi Guido, this is an excellent performance and I thought your use of the slide technique on the resonator guitar especially good.
I wasn’t sure what you meant about having to pluck the string with one finger while muting with the others though. When you were doing that slide technique was there an issue with the other strings ringing uncontrollably ? I have run into this occasionally with the classical playing and I have to stop the bass or treble string ringing over the the other notes but not that common. Regardless of that, I really liked that slide work you did – it is definitely not something I can do because my fingers are too bent up to put a slider on.

Thanks Geoff! About the slide technique, in short, when you play with an open tuning (for example the classic open D or open G) usually there’s no problem to let ring the adjacent strings. But If you play on a standard tuning it’s more difficult and with single melodic lines you have to mute in some way the adjacent strings (the bottle neck produces a sound even if you aren’t plucking the strings).

Interesting Guido. Thanks for your answer. Sadly, I will never get to play slide technique because it is a very cool sound especially what you did.
