Hi everyone, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything. This is something I’ve been working on the last couple days. (Ironically) I probably would have tweaked a few things but having heard the sad news about Gordon’s passing I figured it is what it is.
I had gone out a couple months back and purchased a new bass, so this is my first time recording it as well, took the original bass line and simplified it some but it seems to work.
I hope everyone is doing well!
Thanks for stopping by,Rob

Rob,
Good to hear you. Thanks for posting on our Canadian folk hero. Really nice job. I forgot what a great feel you were developing last time I heard you play and congrats to branching out on bass. Listening to your vocal I got a very Harry Chapin vibe. Enjoyed that very much.

Thanks John, I thought it was so weird to be working on this tune late last night and to wake up to the news, kinda freaked me out a little. I was planning on fine tuning the lead and maybe adding some lead fills but upon learning he passed I decided it was the finished product. I’m never satisfied with my vocals and I’ve developed like chronic laryngitis lately, maybe an allergy thing but it’s made it more challenging to sing.

Thanks for that, well done. It made me remember the the first time my wife to be and I saw Gord.
It was 1967, his Lp EARLY MORNING RAIN had just come out. We at Brandon University in the gym on folding chairs.
I was 17 and Judith was 16. It was one our first dates.
Thanks for the memory.Ken F

Nice one Rob, very timely indeed. To get this straight: You recorded this song, then next day he died?
I’m also learning to play bass, and I’m finding that it’s helped me become a better guitar player.

Thanks Steve, yes I worked on this the last couple days and woke up this morning to the sad news. Crazy right?
I’ve only had the bass a couple months, very awkward at first but getting better. I can only hope it makes my guitar playing better.

Thanks James, I’m never comfortable with my vocals but it’s not much of a song without so I keep trying. Haha

Thank you Denise, no band, no backing track. Just me and a drummer from GarageBand. They’re fun to do and not difficult.

Great job, Rob! You really made it your own, vocally, which is no easy feat on such an iconic song. And, man, you nailed that solo, love it.
Crazy that you were working on this as he passed. I could see where that might freak you out a bit.

That was really great. It is no small feat doing all the instrumentals and voice to this. Your voice is great in spite of what you might think.

Hey Rob,
Well all I can say is that I enjoyed the heck out of that.
The overall groove of the tune was just perfect and your performances on the bass and guitar solo especially was spot on sir.
More than a bit impressed with your vocals – I had no idea.
Take a bow with this one mate. Seriously.
I’m going in for another listen.

Great tribute, Rob. You had achieved the right vibe with your playing and singing. Superb production.
Sundown forever 😢 RIP Gordon Lightfood. But if you could read my mind, you would see me, standing in the early morning rain listening and playing his songs. They will stay forever

This sounds really good. Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald was my favorite but this was right up there too. RIP Gordon Lightfoot.

Haha Garry, I’m almost afraid to do another cover. Once was freaky, twice and I’d have to sell everything music. 😳

Awesome, Rob! I couldn’t believe it. Was that you singing and playing everything? Amazing! I kept waiting and waiting for that lead part and when it finally came it was wow, perfection to me. I wouldn’t have changed anything. What a tribute; fantastic job, man.

I’m familiar with some Canadian singers/songwriters: they very often write songs with very meaningful and poetics lyrics in their songs (see for example the great Leonard Cohen). But I didn’t know Gordon Lightfoot before. Anyway, from this song that you brilliantly covered I can hear he was an excellent songwriter who wrote and sung beautifully and I’m sorry for the lost. Your rendition is really excellent! Your bass and guitar parts are very good, and I liked very much above all your vocals: they are perfect for this song! Excellent tribute!
