I am not going to give my usual introduction to the composer because I am pretty sure this one is pretty well known to all of you 🙂

Whenever I take on anything by Bach, I know I am in for a project and this one was no exception. I kept leaving it and coming back to it periodically because it is just riddled with technical difficulties and I had to practice some of the runs over and over again just to get them in my fingers. He is one of the toughest and most rewarding composers to play.

Great job Geoff! Well done indeed. That piece really does look like a handful, I can imagine the work that went into it.

What book is that arrangement out of?

Hi Richard, I have a series of three books called “The Classic Guitar Collection”. AN extensive collection of pieces that could keep anybody going for a lifetime I imagine.

Volume 1 consists of “relatively easy” compositions (relative being the operative word here, I am not sure I regard any of it as “easy).
Volume 2 is a level up and that is the volume I took this piece out of.
Volume 3 is kind of like volume 2. Its got some things in there that appear to be beyond my level

Well-played, as always, Geoff. It’s clear that this requires a lot of work, so kudos to you sir. Sometimes I think that composers sit there and snicker and say to themselves “Ha, let them try to play THIS one!” I’m just kidding, obviously, but sometimes it does feel that way.

No, it certainly does feel that way David. I think Bach was the ultimate trickster 🙂 ..and he fools you. I will start something by him and I will think “not too bad”, then he will clobber you with something really brutal further into the piece. As was the case with this one. The first repeat section is quite doable but the second is literally murder to play.

You must really like a challenge. You obviously very up to it.
                  Good one.

Thanks Ken, every now and then I will hit myself with a really hard one. I guess I am a glutton for punishment sometimes.

Maybe difficult for you Geoff but you sure make it look easy. Nicely done.

                        Hi Geoff,
I have to say its not a piece of music that naturally appeals to me but that is not the point for your post. You demonstrate very considerable skill in your rendtion and I am sure it is a most complex piece to get your head and fingers around so many congratulations on the acomplished acomplishment. I can now say that after a few listens I feel more appreciation of it, so maybe you are briing me to a higher plane of comprehension.
                        All the Best

Hi John, fortunately I can read music so I don’t retain anything of this piece in my head though I wish I could. If I have anything to do with you appreciating a completely different style of music then I am really quite honored. Listen to the greats playing Bach – people like John Williams, Julian Bream or Anna Vidovic. They should do more to convince you than I ever could.

Very well played Geoff. I think for me personally this is your finest post on Classical Guitar. Bach on guitar (or on any instrument for that matter) is technically, physically and musicality demanding and the final outcome here comes out tops! The contrapuntal nature of Bach’s music leaves the performer very exposed but again you nailed it with very precise left and right hand accuracy. Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸

What a distinct sound and melody, isn’t it?I must congratulate you Geoff on the great effort you put into it but as you say although it may be challenging,it is equally rewarding !!!!!some parts seemed especially demanding but your smile in the end reflects the pleasure and satisfaction you derive from Bach music 💖💖💖

                                  Hi Geoff,
I love Bach’s music. I have a book, ‘Finger Picking J.S. Bach’. I learned ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ and ‘Minuet’. Not as complicated as ‘Gavotte’. But when you play them almost everyone recognizes the melody and says, oh that’s pretty.

I have that book too James. I think I need to look at it again.

Thanks for listening Clarke. This one was a lot of work. Playing Bach requires a lot of attention to detail and I don’t know if I will ever be there.
