My name’s Rick,& I’m new to this site & re-guitar playing I’m 65 years old and haven’t played guitar in over 40 years, so I’m back now this is to the old folks out there or anyone who can use what I’m gonna say, how much did you learn in school that you never used once you left ? a bunch of useless information, apply those lessons to this ( guitar playing), I ordered a book of chords 400 pages, wait a moment I want to have as much fun as is humanly possible with the time I have left,& I ain’t gonna get that knowing a bunch of useless chords,I’ve never heard anyone self included say,”wow did you hear how he played those chords ? I wanna play like that” I was not inspired to play guitar watching someone play a bunch of boring chords,my inspirations where & are Michael Hamilton,Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix, Ernest Isley & so on now if that’s your thing (chords)than have at it,you play those & I’ll get out front & play the fast finger solos I’ll take one every night for the team (lol), I’ll be the point guard just pass me the ball & I’ll do the shooting I only need enough chords to get me from one fast finger solo to the next,HAVE SOME FUN.😅

Hello Rick. Welcome to the site. Are you saying chords and rhythm study are a waste of time?

Welcome Rick. Jimi was renowned for combining rhythm and lead in his power trios, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsies. Rhythm is 90% of guitar playing and lead means nothing without a great rhythm. As you’ll find in many of Brian’s lesson, lead and rhythm can be hard to separate.

Hey John this is This the aspiring “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD”,let’s not take each other out of context, nor put words in each other’s mouths,I don’t mix my words,I say exactly what I mean & I mean exactly what I say, there’s no need to interrupt what I say now that, that’s been established as far as I’m concerned at this stage I’m trying to have as much FUN as I can, I’m teaching myself to play this instrument, based on what attracted me to it & it wasn’t a bunch of theory, and stressing over information I’ll never use ,I saw solos, I saw different picking styles that’s what I was attached to,that inspired me, what ever floated your boat of course chords have purpose, there purpose for ME right now is to get me from one “FAST FINGER SOLO to the next “FAST FINGER SOLO” & guess what “I’m having the time of my life, I’m having FUN.

Thank you Charjo for the welcome, people stop trying to play an instrument because someone somewhere sucked the FUN out of it, this is a hobby this is something we choose to do, people get discouraged WHY & than loose interest because it gets mondaine (boring) FUNN-LESS, something or someone sucked the fun out of it there goes another one just like the other one, & the casualties pile up, this is about self expression it’s an instrument and shouldn’t be confused with a tool, keep it FUN whatever the initial attraction was keep that up front never loose sight of the FUN, that way you’ll look forward to it and not turn away from it.

I don’t know for sure however I’d be willing to bet the truthful ones amount us that it was not chords they FIRST caught your eye that came later, you take a person from where there at and guide them elevate them, spark there curiosity than build on that most of the gifted ones amount us ie.,.Jimi Hendrix, Michael Hamilton,Ernest Isley, Robin Trower ect..ect..ect started off listening to Blues men Robert Johnson, later Howlin Wolf, then BB Kings ect..ect..ect listened to music ROOTED in what notes not theory, not the pentatonic scale, that stuff represents evaluation that’s not where ya start that’s where ya end up,those guitar gods EVOLVED into what they became they didn’t start there, unbutton your collar & have some FUN.from the aspiring “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD.

My apologies if I took you out of context. I am just trying to under stand what you mean. If you look at Brian’s vast library of lessons, there are an array of melodic rhythm arrangements in a wide variety of genres: country blues, ragtime blues, delta blues, rockabilly, jazz, swing and so on and so forth. YOU NEED THE CHORDAL ARRANGMENTS TO CREATE A MELODY. For example, check out lesson EP 301, 60% rhythm 40% lead. The lead is augmented by the rhythm. Without the rhythm there is no context. Also, try listening to the Freebird solo without Gary’s rhythm chops, Leon’s bass, the piano and drums. Without rhythm the Freebird solos become meaningless noise. Many of us perform rhythmic solo arrangements for our monthly challenges. We post them on the site at the end of each month. I would invite you to do so. Be well.

Good morning, thank you for the dialogue, first off who is Brian ? I guess he’s someone important ? I don’t know him, however it appears as if you’ve taken me completely out of context, I never or implied nor intentional intended to imply that stuff wasn’t important (to somebody), however you don’t, no let me restate that I didn’t require all of that to make rhythm that’s in my soul, music to ME is internal rhythm is natural, 5 notes and I can get a grove a rhythm a flow, all I’m saying is don’t become mechanical and loose you becoming robotic, it’s like dancing it’s in you/me I didn’t learn to roller skate from a book,I don’t know anyone who learned to do any of those things from a book I tap into me, my soul, and pull it out,and prefect it (what ever the it maybe), with practice.

Check this out, all of that stuff was put in a book or a lesson, however it didn’t come out of one, it initially came out of someone either there soul or head most of the time it was both than put into a book or a lesson.

Check this out, see if you can bounce to this, 4..3tuu1/4..3tuu1/4..321/4.3.2.1./4..3tuu1/4..3tuu1, I just made that up, it goes like this, read this just as it’s written but drag the 2 out (toow)say it out loud(4,dot,dot,321/4,dot,dot,321/4,dot,dot,321/4,dot,3,dot,2,dot,1,dot/4..321/4..321, and on and on that groove came out of me.four dot, dot,thrée,toow,one/four,dot,dot,three,toow,one, drag the two on all except the ones where the numbers are followed by an immediate dot example four, dot, three, dot, two, dot, one, dot, don’t drag those duce’s, ya see it comes out of your soul.

John & Charjo I can recall back in the 70’s a book came out with notes and tabs in it, it was a book translating some of Jimi Hendrix’s songs, it had the album cover from the “Electric Lady Land” album as it’s outside front cover, in that book it was stated that they (the music industry) where translating the best they could some parts couldn’t be translated cause they didn’t know what he (Mr.Hendrix) was doing to get those effects feed back & such) at the same time it was stated in that book (the original book) that Jimi Hendrix (at that time) couldn’t read or write music as a matter of fact that was true of MOST of the Rock & Roll artist of the day just fyi..

Yes Rick but you’re not Jimi Hendrix!
I suggest you take a look at Brian’s foundational courses, they are here: https://www.activemelody.com/my-courses/
Just work your way through them, and also dive into some of the 10-years worth of weekly lessons and micro lessons.
Sit back and explore the site. If you ask sensible questions in good faith the people here will be more than willing to help you make progress.
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. Theory, chords and scales are essential if you want to make progress. We all wanted to be God at some point, but ‘wanting’ something isn’t enough. If you want it that bad you’ve got to build a foundation and work at it.

I like this site & I’m fully aware of whom I am & whom I ain’t (HaHa), I as you where only responding to a response ( intellectual masterbation) lol all in good fun from my vantage point anyway, you all are good people and that’s a rare find nowadays,my only was and is let’s not take ourselves too seriously and let’s all try and remember to keep the FUN up front.

I’ll take great musicianship over ‘fun’ any day 🙂
One of the many benefits of Active Melody, for me, is finally discovering why some things work and some things don’t. I’ve been playing for years but the jigsaw puzzle only really started coming together since joining AM in January this year.
It’s equally cool to discover there are a ton of new things that I could be doing that I had not discovered by myself by accident years ago. You need a smattering of theory to make the most sense out of it and thereby make it your own.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you’re wanting to achieve for your own playing.

Hey family, it’s great to be alive & kicking, us old folks can really appreciate the gift of or extension of life, any who most aspiring “what ever’s”, in my case, & let’s say it together yeah yeah we know Rick a “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD” yeah Rick we know, there I go talking to myself again, most of us fall between my brother “Mark H.” (brother in this fraternaty) who’d take musicianship over fun, & me the fun love-n aspiring “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD”,my comments for the most part are aimed towards us “BEGINNERS” cause most folks get discouraged & drop off during the beginning & never reach my brother Mark H’s position ( musicianship over fun), WHY? no FUN, possibly loosing sight of what the initial attraction was to begin with so they put the instrument 🎸🎷 down & seldom if ever return to it cause it’s no longer any FUN, WHY is it no longer FUN ? cause someone or something sucked the FUN out of it,I’m a BEGINNER,I CAN’T PLAY,YET I’m an ASPIRING,let me say that again ASPIRING “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD” why is that my aspersion ? that was the initial attraction 🧲,I’m talking to the BEGINNER NOT the Mark H’s, where trying to get where you are and the quickest way to loose someone is to overwhelm them,so to my fellow beginners, “FOCUS ON THE FUN” & the rest will come, shoot for the moon & grab a star on the way, make your mistakes laugh at yourself go at your speed take your time impress yourself don’t stress over this loosen up and have FUN.🥵😊

I’ll kick this off by attempting to reestablish where I am in my journey to becoming a “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD”, my name is Rick, I’m 65 years old,I presently live in Indiana about 10 months now in route to Agusta Georgia the first week of November to spend the rest of the time I have left with family & especially my grand children the previous 64 years of my life I’ve lived in Chicago. I got my Fender Stratocaster waaay back in mid March 2022,from CME (Chicago Music Exchange)it took me 10 days to penetrate her ORA (RADIANT GLOW) eliminating from her curvatures even (at midnight with all the lights out, blinds & drapes closed & drawn) I would even hear the quote say “AHHHHHHHH”,YES I was intimidated for 10 days I’d just stare at her, than I heard a loud voice say “Rick it’s not gonna play itself, as much as it cost at least pick it up”, it sound like my wife’s voice, “I do not recall THAT being in the budget” she use to say ( MAY SHE REST IN PEACE), any who so I’ve painfully made it through the calous stage, now my joints hurt all of which I’m willing to endure in my journey to become a “FAST FINGER SOLO PLAYING GOD”, I’m now working on finger dexterity, accuracy & finger strength, all kinds of picking up down, down up, speed picking & speed picking oh did I say speed picking ?,enough about me I’d enjoy hearing from ya, that is if I’m in the right place, Fraternaly Yours from Rick.
