Hey Brian you mention this after about 6mins on lesson 2.
Got me looking how the CADGE relates to the five scale positions.
I figured C=5, A=4, D=2, G=3 and E=1.
Am I right and would this be a good theory lesson?
Cheers
Simon
Simon,
The CAGED chord shapes connect a given major chord root to root and correspond to the same key five boxes of the major pentatonic. Using Brian’s version of the numbering system (where box shape determines the box number);
G major shape overlays box 1 major pentatonic
E major shape overlays box 2
D major shape overlays box 3
C major shape overlays box 4
A major shape overlays box 5
There are only 3 commonly used shapes of the minor chords;
E minor shape overlays box 1 minor pentatonic
D minor shape overlays box 2 minor pentatonic
A minor shape overlays box 4 minor pentatonic
There is an awkward C minor shape that fits box 3.
There is a power chord shape that fits box 5 but no commonly used minor chord.
Hope this makes sense for you.
John
