My work in progress, timing is down. No need to play this any faster is there? Oh, alright…..

Very Nice!! That is perfect just the way it is.
Question, what do you do to work on your timing? That is what I need the help in more than anything!

            Thanks
            Gary

@ Maradonagol, Thanks, Roberto. That’s my American standard Tele, neck pick up through a Boss Blues Driver pedal into a Fender ’68 reissue Vibrolux with some amp reverb, miked with a Shure 57 into the input device.
@ gquellet, Gary, I watch Brian’s video a few times and then, carefully study the tab and count out the measures where I need to. After that I worked with the video tab at about 75% speed and worked out the problem parts by looping them. Then I started playing with Brian’s slow backing track with guitar and finally today without the guitar. The video tab at 100% is not as fast as Brian’s fast backing track but you can speed the video tab up to 125% or I’ll start working with a metronome to get the tempo faster.
Anyway, I have recently found counting and keeping a strong beat by tapping a foot to be really helpful.

Very nice Charjo. Your tone is just awesome! I have this lesson in line to work on too. It was interesting to see your reply on how you learn and practice lessons too..scott.

Beautiful playing, John. And the tone quality makes it a real joy to listen to.

Great playing Chargo and the quality of the recording is top notch. I was particularly interested to hear how you’re getting your timing so good as that’s an area I’ve struggled with.

Sounds good at this tempo, and yes, you have nailed the timing. The Layla version is probably 20% faster. But once you have it down like this, the extra speed will come with familiarity. Speed is a byproduct of relaxation. As a result, the way to build speed, oddly enough, is to practice slowly.

@Duffy P, I think you’re totally right. We need to get these totally smooth and familiar at slow speeds before even thinking about speeding up. That probably includes even working out how you want to play the dynamics.
I also don’t think I would ever have worked so hard at timing if I didn’t hear myself recorded and putting it out there for others. So, thanks for listening and commenting. This is my first step at putting myself out there.

@charjo, I agree John, the recording thing is an eye opener on timing….I guess no one was really listening at those dances and bars in 1979!

                              A 1968 Vibrolux…….gear envy over here….

                              again, great job!

                                Charjo,
That was awesome!! your sound and timing is excellent. Love the sound of that ’68 reissue Vibrolux. Also agree on posting video’s on this site. Before I became a member of AM, I had never recorded my self playing. Watching the postings of member’s playing, I decided to set my self up to record. Man!! I can say, the first time I did record my self and play it back.. I did not think it was me playing. What my ears heard while I was playing and what the recording sounded like were so different. Great learning tool!!

                                  Charjo,
I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing your settings on the amp and pedal. I have a 65 Deluxe Reverb and a Blues Driver that I often use. I typically have the amp set as follows, Volume=2.5, Treble=5, Base=7 and Reverb=4. As for the Blues Driver, Volume=9 O’clock, Tone=1 O’clock and Gain= 11 O’clock.
I’d just like to compare you settings to mine. I do understand that there is other factors involved, but I just like see what others set their gear..
                                  Thanks,
                                  Mark

@MBaribe, Mark, my settings are pretty close. Amp volume 2, treble 4,bass, I actually set at 10 for this piece, reverb 5, Blues Driver gain at 11:30, volume at 9:30, tone about 12:00. I’ve got a Fulltone Plimsoul and a Blackstar HT distortion pedal also, but I really like the Blues Driver with the Fender amp for Brian’s blues lessons.
