This lesson was one of my first postings back in July 2015, after joining AM late Dec 2014. I spent an entire weekend learning the piece and I can’t tell you how many takes I did. I thought I would do it again just to see how my playing might have changed, and hopefully, improved.Oh yes, and this time it took me about 30 minutes to get it together. It’s not dramatic but I think there’s a difference. I’d be interested to hear what any of you think and whether you have tried this yourself. Thanks and Brian, I am constantly blown away by the quality of your compositions.

        My original post;

        Here’s the redo.

          Ok,
So John.. My first impression after listening to both was.. Boy!!! I could sense the total confidence in your playing on the second version. It does make a big difference in the overall sound of one’s playing. Besides that, much smoother, great bends and timing.
Version one was great, but version two does shine, and shows how much your efforts have payed off.

Great stuff John, I’m always happy when I see a new posting from you..

Wow that was enjoyable . I liked both versions but I think the confidence came thru in the second version.
I always find myself going back to a lesson or song and wondering why I had trouble the first time . I guess it’s just practice and confidence .
Brian’s lessons have a way of doing that .
Keep posting John your a great player

Yea, I hear all kinds of neatness in that second one. Congrats man.. I can hear all the techniques, if you know what I mean. Very polished.. and I like shiny things.. 😉

I have said before, it is important to hold on to those older recordings, this is why.

Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

                @charjo

John the difference is all in the intensity that comes through in the 2nd version due to the confidence that you will hit the right note, and bends etc, so you are focusing on musicality, not the notes themselves, you are enjoying playing the piece for its musical value….not going through the motions to get through it…..this is the sign of growing player maturity…..congrats amigo…

@MBaribe,@richie b, @Music-AMG, @Maradonagol thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Your comments are really appreciated and confirms for me what I was thinking, that there was a lot more confidence in the redo.Even the mistakes sound better!

More confident in the second one, and the playing is better. At the same time the second one is a bit more aggressive in tone. To my ears, the extra reverb on the first one is closer to a typical Gilmour tone. Without the title, hearing them blind, I would more likely identify the first as a Pink Floyd knockoff. And I still think the second is better.

As said before, the new one is more confident. On the other hand, the tone is totally different and begs for more confident and aggressive approach, which you did. Is this a chicken and egg situation?

I think you would have played in more laid back style if you did have the same reverberating tone.

Both are something I enjoyed, and I let SoundCloud entertain me with your music for a while afterwards 😉

A cracking post John, I’ve been working on that one myself and you’ve shown me that I must try harder, it’s that haunting sound you’ve given this composition, you’ve nailed John, and thanks to Brian for composing something so very close to the Gilmour sound,

The balance in the length of your note playing shines through with the emotional connection that you have in what you are playing, that I feel is what we all strive to achieve. Well done, sir.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Thanks , again, everyone. @Vojtech, that’s a very good point. I know that different backing tracks will bring out different playing in me. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t play that assertively 7 mos ago, particularly in the bends and timing.

The difference is you are bending like a boss in the second one. The first one you are not 100% sure where you are bending to. You just own the second one with confidence.

Nice improvement John. Keep it up and I’ll be getting some lessons from you in the near future. 🙂

Major improvement in the second – you could definitely hear confidence coming through. So cool hearing this for me, because that’s living proof that you’re growing as a guitar player.

Hi John now you play with more pathos, notes are more dramatic. I feel much more intensity not only in bendings but also in a tortured sound.

This is a good example of the differences you mentioned that I might not have heard if you hadn’t put two versions of the same tune side by side. I agree you sound more confident, noting it especially in the way you hold notes, and lays bends on top of bends.

What Vojtech and Midas said has interesting implications, Vojtech’s could be tested right away (Vojtech, your comment gave me the idea to try amplification when I rework EP127, thank you, just hadn’t considered it–being an apartment dweller, I just seldom plug in).

A real joy to listen to both versions, really. The first one was already pretty good I think, but the second take was that of a seasoned player. Confidence is the word. No need to rush, in sync with the band (backing track sounds so pejorative here. I could picture you with a real band right there) plus the choice of a perfact sound. Man, I love the sound of that guitar and it fits the song perfectly! John, you are getting better so quickly, it’s pure joy to watch that happen. I mean, you were already good a year ago (as proven here), but to advance so much further within barely twelve months is a great accomplishment. Taking only 30 minutes for the second take is another indication (when I read “30” I thought you would write “takes”. well, I guess that would have been me at the moment. On a good day. No such thing, though. 30minutes – wow!) …

So, don’t let up now, keep pushing your limits – you are on to something big and I am looking forward to watching you get better still!

PS: Aint this a great example of how valuable it is to record oneself? No better way to track your own progress.

PPS: I second Midas’ suggestion to record this again a year from now 🙂

Another great one. Obvious growth in playing. I wonder if guitar, amp, mic, are the same? Or is it just reverb as Duffy pointed out. The production is different.
Maybe a note explaining would be helpful to those of us on the road behind you.

@ranja, I recorded the first, last July, with Garageband and an iRig input directly into my computer. I played the same Stratocaster for both attempts. The second was miked directly from my Vibrolux amp with amp reverb, gain from a Blackstar HT distortion pedal, a little slapback from the TC electronic Flashback and a bit of chorus vibrato setting on a Fulltone DejaVibe pedal into my DAW. Not exactly a double-blinded random controlled trial but the ability to do all that is part of the progress, too.

That is a total coincidence! I have been working on this lesson over the past few days, and tonight I decided to have a go at recording a version of it, and posting it. Then I log into AM and see your post! My version is a million miles short of yours, but I will keep working at it, and anyway I thoroughly enjoyed playing it!

Well done on your inspirational version!

Yes, it’s plain to see (or hear) that your playing skill has reached a new level. More confident is a good way to describe it. BUT – and I don’t know if I should say this – I actually liked the tone (more Gilmour-like) of your first effort better. Why is that??
