A lot of us know Chet Atkins. One of his best known songs, I’d say, is Windy and Warm. That song was written by John D. Loudermilk. He was an American songwriter. He wrote many hit songs for many different people, and kept a few for himself.
Any way, he also wrote this song that Chet recorded called Cloudy and Cool. Way lesser known than Windy and Warm. It’s kind of a novelty. Many tricky aspects to it. But pretty fun to play. I’ve been working on it this evening and thought some of you may get a kick out of this one, so I took a quick video. This was very impromptu. Id like to try and perform it somewhere. The challenge is keeping the thing in tune. Being a little off makes for a cringy little while. Ill just have to keep playing it.JFL

Wow JFL! Top shelf performance. I know ‘Windy and Warm’ as I played that many moons ago! This one is new to me and … very clever (composed and of course performed)! Love the title and I definitely think the music reflects it. Masterfully played. 👏👏👏🌟👏👏👏 All the best! 😎🎸😎

Oh man, JFL, that was just a fantastic performance! I was totally entertained, not only by the immaculate thumbing and picking, but also the whimsical tuning changes! We don’t see that often here on Active Melody, if ever! It sure sounded like fun to play, you had your inner Tommy Emmanuel shine in this impromptu recording!

A cool performance JFL of a lesser known JDL piece. Loved the tuning down to the minor key mid piece. Very entertaining, thanks for posting.

Wonderful, JFL. I think that would steal the show at an open mic.

Loved the meddling with tuning in the middle of this i have to say. Like you mentioned, it is risky doing this during a performance because you could tune out and fail to tune back properly.
Great performance! ❤️

Nicely played J. Your rhythmic timing on this could make-or-break it, and you kept it tight and in the pocket. Good ear to be able to dial in the the de-tuning on the fly like that. I can also hear that you had fun playing this…makes it all the more musical sounding. Reminds me of watching Chet play…sometimes he would have his very serious face on, but some of his best playing was when he was relaxed and smiling and just having fun playing (especially when he was playing with Jerry Reed).
Very relaxed flow and fun to listen to.

That’s what I call stellar performance, JFL. I really like the song and the thumb picking.

Wow, I was not familiar with this tune, but I liked it very much in your brilliant rendition! This tricky tuning thing up and down, switching from minor to major and viceversa is for sure spectacular and hard to to in the middle of a performance, but you mastered it well! Very well done, enjoyable and inspiring to listen to!

Awesome performance.
No need to ask how much work must have went into this.
I’d say the right hand is crucial for the piece and if you lost a step on it, the whole thing could fall down.
Very cool tuning trick and I agree that it’s a big risk live but you’ll just have to have faith and get it out there.
If you ever do it at an open mic please get it filmed and post it here I’m sure everyone would love to see you go 😉

That’s really great JFL. Amazing right hand technique. And very neat to de tune mid song.
