Anyone here use Presonus Studio One Artist 4?
Ive been trying to record but keep getting a clipping message when trying to export to an MP3 file.
The meters on my tracks are not showing any clipping and neither does my interface when I’m recording. When I lower the master output volumes in the DAW it corrects the problem but than my volumes are too low.
        Any suggestions?
        Thanks

          Hi Ivan,
I have version 3. I don’t generally notice the clipping until I attempt to export and then get that same message. When I first mix my tracks, I try to get a Main meter reading between -12 and -3 but may get some transients that show as a momentary decibel number in red at the top of the meter. Usually the clipping will only be 2 03 decibels.
I usually check my mix to see if I can reduce volume on a complete track to fix the problem. If not I look at my guitar track and see if there’s a section that I can select and reduce the volume in the one area. You can often tell by the recording waveform. Another trick can be to add compression to the lead. That will reduce overall volume but also dampen any spikey transients. That usually does the trick. Sometimes you might actually have to slightly increase the lead volume after adding the compression. Last resort is to reduce the master volume slightly, but if I like the dynamics and the clipping is minor I might do this as the first step. Hope that helps.

I frequently add some compression when recording acoustic guitar, but not so much for electric guitar. The compressor in Logic Pro lets you watch a moving graph in real-time which shows the amplitude peaks and the amount of compression happening. Very cool gadget, and worth delving into the meaning of all the different controls, like threshold, ratio, mix, makeup, etc. You can tweak the controls and watch what happens on the graph.

              Thanks John.
I don’t see any clipping at all on my tracks. My guitar track meter is at about -9 and all my wave forms look normal. Like you the only time I notice clipping is when I export. Ive tried reducing track volume and master volume and it does eliminate the message but than the overall volume is too low. Not sure what’s going on.
I did read online today that clipping only makes a difference if you’re going to master the final product which I don’t do.

                Thanks Steve.
Charjo suggested the same about adding compression. I’m going to try that idea tomorrow and see if it helps. It’s strange because all my meters shoe no clipping and my wave forms look normal.

Does this only happen when exporting to mp3, or is it happening with other file types too?.
I would be tempted to export to WAV and then convert the WAV file to try eliminate the chance of the mp3 export command being bugged.

That’s a good question Billy. I’m not sure. I’m going to try exporting to WAV or AIFF. Do you think that could be the problem?

Im thinking along those lines seeing as John has the same issue when exporting to mp3, if my guess is wrong then at least one question is eliminated to try solve the problem.
                      Good luck kiddo.

Tried your suggestion Billy but it didn’t work. I did discover that you can add a limiter to the master bus and it corrects the problem. Thanks again.

Glad to read you found a workaround for the problem.
