      Welcome Peter,
Thats great to see you playing again. I have been out of sync a few years and got back into it again too. I love acoustic blues, slack key in open tunings. I may not know alot but I enjoy it. I have issues with my fingers from working in super cold weather. Alitte at a time works great. Just warm up to it. Its great to start playing again.

I went about 15 years without even owning a guitar. I went down to Mexico and then bought an elcheapo, but it was cool. I also ended up putting my guitar in the closet for about 7 years and rarely touched it, but now it is always next to me and gets played daily. Getting up there in age, but I feel I’m a 12 year older once again.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . ๐Ÿ™‚ 6stringerPete

It really is all about โ€melodyโ€. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. ๐Ÿ™‚ Pete

I got an Old Kraftsman guitar, bought from the Spiegel catalog, when I was 11. Spent what seemed like an eternity learning to play C, G,F. Then lost interest for about 10 years. Bought myself a Yamaha fg-200 new in1972, still have it and it sounds great.! Messed with it on and off for about 2 years.Lost interest again. For the next 30 odd years that guitar went from closet to attic to basement to garage, virtually untouched. Funny that I never wanted to get rid of it. I ‘m glad I didn’t , cause a few years ago I got the itch to try it again. This time it stuck. Though my playing has improved some, and I now have more guitars than my ability warrants, I realize that I really just enjoy how much fun it all is. Fortunately I made it to retirement, so now I can devote more time to it. By the way, I too went from classic rock to loving acoustic blues ( Hmmm…is it just an old guy thing? ) Anyway,I try to remember to have fun with it and to play like there’s nobody listening , and mercifully , there”s not!
      Peace , Josh

I got my first guitar when I was 16 and my mother could read sheet music and play the piano so I tried learning to read music to play the guitar. What a mistake that was. Between that and trying to learn the dreaded F chord, I gave it up. I did learn how to play the G, C & D chords so every once in a while I would pick it up and strum it a little. Over the years someone would show me a lick or two and then in the early 70’s when Neil Young came out with the song “A Heart of Gold”, I could play that in the key of G and that got me interested again and I started playing more, learned how to make the F chord and later took some lessons and got a little better.

For one reason or another I lost interest in the guitar for a while and put it away. Every once in a while I would take it out and play around with it but for over 20 years I didn’t play much at all. Now I’m retired and have plenty of spare time and got back into the guitar by searching youtube for “how to play blues guitar” which led me to activemelody.com. Between Brian’s teaching method and the flexibility of video lessons, I’m now playing every day and getting better.

So you are definitely not the only one who didn’t play for many years and then picked it up again.

      Cheers,

      Tom

Its good to hear from other people how long they have been away and come back it must be the magnectic pull from the guitar that is doing it….lol

In response to Josh’s remark ” Though my playing has improved some, and I now have more guitars than my ability warrants,” I have over 20 guitars now but I figure if I was to buy a painting or sculpture which I don’t think either could match the beauty of a guitar as a piece of art, no one would bat an eye lid. So I justify my collection as art that I can actually do something with. It doesn’t get any better than that. It’s like a remark Brian made in another post What good is Jewellery!! I can buy a beautiful guitar for much less than a piece of gem stone & actually use it for something other than an inanimate object. So I say, Buy More Guitars & enjoy them if not just for their beauty alone they are much more…..they are fun, they comfort us when we are down, they bring a smile to our faces. Do you need any more reasons?

Mike, I think you read more into that , than was meant. The ‘ more guitars than my ability warrants”, comes from my own deeply ingrained practicality and me being my own worst critic. Nothing more. I totally agree with all the comparisons you made. The last third of my sentence was ..”I realize that I really just enjoy how much fun it all is.” I can gaurrantee ,that I’ll be adding to my collection ,before too long. I truly enjoy all aspects of guitar ,playing ,collecting ,looking, feeling, listening ,learning! So , between your response and what I already know, the answer to your question would be , Nope , I don’t need anymore reasons. LOL!

Good to hear it Josh. I think of myself as someone who takes in “stray guitars” LOL & gives them a good home. For those that would like to collect guitars but have trouble with space, you can now buy miniature replicas like the example shown.
And No, I didn’t read any more into it than was meant. It was not meant as advise to you per se but to all of us not to feel guilty about our guitar collections & our playing ability. Don’t take us Ozzies too seriously. We often have our tongues firmly wedged into our cheeks. ha ha ha

I actually started playing the piano and wanted a guitar when I was a teenager. I played the piano for about ten years and the guitar for five and stopped playing both for about eight.

I tried playing them both a while ago and my fingers seem to remember the guitar much more than the piano (which I found very funny because I played the piano much longer and more than the guitar). So I started playing the guitar again after about eight years of not playing.
