I don’t know if this helps (or if it’s correct) but I have always played a D9 as second finger on the fifth string, first on the fourth string and third finger barring the 3rd, 2nd and first fret.

Anton, that would be the typical way to play the D9 but, some of us are not flexible at that first joint on the ring finger and have to find a work around. Everybody’s fingers are a little unique.

I wanted to try this out in the key of E so used the D9 shape for the E and the A9 shape for the A and B
