Western Swing Style Guitar Lesson – Lead Guitar Lesson – EP171

Description

In this guitar lesson you’ll learn how to play a jazzy sounding, western swing lead over a I, IV, V chord progression for a much more melodic sounding lead. I’ll show you how to play a few jazz runs by targeting the notes within the chord. This gives you a much more melodic sounding lead, and you’ll find it’s really not that difficult to do! This works on acoustic or electric guitar.

My idea was to skip this weeks lesson and go for the muddy waters/hendrix inspired one. This one fit’s perfectly in the stuff i’m doing the last few weeks. Thanks again Brian.

This may seem totally off the wall initially Brian but……….for some reason I have a real curiosity on how a cool bass guitar would sound in conjunction with this arrangement!! I can envision some cooler jump blues style bass runs and climbs and some other cool concepts I’ve listened to before over music like this and often yearned to grasp onto some of this. If ever you have been tempted to mix things up a wee bit and toss in a bass lesson……….even on a regular guitar but often being a ‘switch hitter’ on instruments is a great asset and when I had a band we’d often switch up instruments (generally just guitar & bass) and find a new respect for what it takes to come up wit complete nice bass parts. Any way…….my 2 cents….

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for a great lesson. Great feel and fun to play.
Might you have been thinking Johnny B Goode for the lick you wondered out loud about?
    Keep up the good work.

Great lesson and introduction to Western Swing Brian – thanks. I think the technique you use in the first half is called an “enclosure” in jazz guitar (approaching a target note from a chromatic/scale note above & below)

Hi Brian, the lick at 16.45 was originated by T-Bone Walker, copied by Bill Haley, Chuck Berry etc., but more importantly, you have opened up a whole range of soloing concepts I have never understood in just 23 minutes. Understanding how and why it is done versus didactic learning is a godsend. I can’t thank you enough. Cheers and thanks.

Excellent. This material was admittedly outside my frame of reference but Brian was right in saying to stick with it as it is technically not difficult to play. These ideas are dynamite and immediatley useful to other stuff I’m working on. Kudos.

The first couple of lessons were ABSOLUTELY DAUNTING! I didn’t know how to flat pick—very dominant left-handed. I am amazed just how fast I am picking it up now! Whatta guy! Brian, you really DO IT!

the really cool part, ; rewind , rewind, rewind, think I got it! and thanks for the advice on the upgrade Fender Blues Jr Amp, ‘everything’ is so much different now without the Mustang Amp, sounds like old school bite them in the buttocks ( well if you get my drift)

I am into this again today, this time though ,I am thoroughly watching and listening to you explain the semi and whole steps technique you are showing.. I haven’t yet come across the term either.. it is possibly termed playing inside and outside or maybe playing parallel chords? Not too sure yet cause I just started watching another lesson elsewhere on parallel chords and first time watching you explain ( the other practice times ,I just went straight to the soundslice and so this intro is very insightful and listening to the lesson.. just wondering what it is called too…or if you found out yet? Anyway, cool lesson , will be doing this and ep170 today on acoustic! thanks man!
