Description
In this lesson, I’ll show you how to play an original, blues composition that was composed in the style of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Mississippi John Hurt – which means fingerstyle (no pick). I’ll break it down and show you how to play it note for note in this 30 minute lesson. This lesson is only available to premium members.

All that is needed here Brian……is that wooden back porch tapping with a summer breeze gently swaying and two large jugs…..one empty to blow into for bass with this tune and one full for refreshment!! Cool ending chord too!!

These finger picking lessons make me feel like I must be wired wrong!

Brian,
All your fingerstyle lessons are amazing! These type of lessons are the most difficult for me, but I love the challenge. I also would not have discovered some amazing guitarist like Mississippi John Hurt if it wasn’t for you. I’ve been watching videos of him all night and he is amazing. Thanks again!

Another great lesson. Thanks. Also, i would like to request a song with an additional challenge of adding some percussion. Either with a pick (parapicking) or just with the hand.

Great lesson, Brian!

Good one! Happy New Year everybody.

Terrific new song Brian! In my area of the country, for the last twenty years I’ve been unable to find a guitar teacher who inspires me to play again, until I found you and ActiveMelody.com. Keep up the great work!

Just joined today and wanted to say what a great lesson this is! Finger picking is the most challenging of all playing for me…

brian this is awesome. as much as i love e blues it’s nice to switch it up now and then. the techniques you’ve taught in previous lessons are on full display here and i love being familiar with them already when you trot them out. the more of these we do together the easier they become. for anyone getting frustrated with these finger-style lessons just keep practicing - it’s all about the perseverance. the harder i work the easier they get :-). though that f7 hammer-on with the pinky is still killing me! thanks so much brian!

That’s a nice one and didn’t take too long to get it… Fun and relaxing to play.. You can speed it up or slow it down to your liking or mood..

This is a great lesson.. I want to thank you for turning me on to Mississippi John Hurt. He was awesome ! I’d never listened to him before . Monday morning blues is a great song, and believe it or not I’m close to learning it. Not near as good as him but good enough you’d know what it was. Rarely, not very often a song moves . while watching him play lonesome valley it brought tears to my eyes. It’s so beautifully played and everything I’ve read about him said he was a kind, gentle soul and you can tell that’s true watching him.. You can tell he had a hard life. He didn’t find success until late in his life and that was moderate.. He deserved so much better.. Thank you again for turning me on to him ✌

Great lesson again thanks Brian. You explain things very well. Do you have a lesson similar to this in E?

Thank You for a great lesson Brian. By the way, why does the tab in the F7 section show an open string? We are suppose to bar the first fret, correct?
timk says
I, too am confused by the TAB for the F7 part. It doesn’t seem to match the lesson as shown in the video. Great piece of music! I love the way it’s put together

Suggestion: This is a charming tune, Brian. It’s fun to play. I’m a new member and I started here since most of what I know how to play on the guitar is country blues Piedmont style, John Hurt, etc. and thus it’s easier for now than learning some of the other styles you offer! (I also love the JJ Cale fingerstyle lesson, which also makes use of alternating thumb). I would suggest offering the thumb-over F as an option though (I just use the easy F major 7 shape), since that is how most people who play in this style would play it rather than the barred F. While it may not be comfortable for some players who haven’t done it before, it’s far easier in the long run for this style of music since the C and F transition is such a common change. Because you are such a fine guitarist, you make going back and forth from the barred F look relatively easy, but for those who have a big enough thumb reach or a guitar that allows for it, the thumb over F is far easier and I think preferable over time!
Aron G says
I see now from the tablature that you are playing the third fret C on the A string, so that wouldn’t work with my F chord without the pinky being involved. I guess I adapted it a bit!

Scratch my last comment. First comment stands.

This lesson is so amazing ..I never really did it until today .. I am embellishing off this and using a capo on the second fret ..after following you slowly.. you have a gift for teaching even with the tab ,, very delighted to be learning from your tutorials, this one is aspecially a favorite!
sunburst says
I have to look up Blind Melon Jefferson and Mississippi John Hunt.. thanks for the intro, the only other Artists composers musicians I thought of were Chet Atkins and Tommy Emannual from youtube .. this is a real treat..fun to play!
