Description
In this lesson, learn to play a Mark Knopfler inspired guitar part (both rhythm and lead). I realize that Mark Knopfler plays 3 finger style and doesn’t use a pick. I’m not showing his technique in this lesson but showing how he would approach the notes (i.e. his phrasing). I might also recommend 2 albums of his that are must haves – “Sailing To Philadelphia” and “Ragpicker’s Dream”. Another classic is “Neck and Neck” with Chet Atkins.

mark K and Brian and my two favorite guitarist thanks for everything you put on your website love it.
Awesome lesson! Can’t rw/ff Part 1. Seems like video 1 is a diff format.
Ah! Youtube format.. Got it.
Great lesson! Another recommendation for the must have list is “Real Live Roadrunning” w/ Emmylou Harris.
It is one of the best but all of his recordings are great, for me at least the best of all artists. Noting hillbillies is another rather obscure offering
Excellent….love the way you break it all down…eaisier to learn…
Good example of how effective a simple melody can sound. MK is a master at that approach. Lots of opportunity for further improvisation up the neck. Nice backing with an educated thumb.
Thanks Brian.

Great Lesson, I love the sound of Mark Knopfler. Thank you for explaining the context of the melody with the underlying harmonies of the chord progression.
Any more advice on obtaining the MK tone ie amp settings etc would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work,
Anyone else find 1st 2 backing tracks not right? Really enjoying this lesson as always.
excellent!
@islamujeres - I can’t replicate this - they are working fine on this end and I haven’t had any complaints from anyone else.
Thank you Brian. Strange. Must be at this end. AM website is always rock solid.
EP059 - Minus Rhythm - Slow
EP059 Minus Lead (Normal Tempo)
Both of these just sound like organ notes held for a long time. This is whether I play them on-line or play the download version. I can send you the downloaded MP3 if you’d like to see what I’m hearing.
Well done Brian. Looking forward to more examples of MK’s music.
Hi Brian
I have same problem with first two backing tracks.
Running a Macbook Pro..
Hi Brian. Thanks for the MK lessons. For some reason they seem to make more sense than some others!!
I also have the problem with the 1st -2 backing track?
Excellent - as usual. Thanks Brian.
What settings do you have on your amp to get that MK sound?
Now that I’m up to speed I realize the backing tracks are ok. It starts a little quick but the monotones represent the chord changes. It sounds very cool. They are both labeled ‘without rhythm’. Right Brian? I love playing this tune.
“… it starts a little quick” …agree, maybe a count in would help ?
Clean channel on amp - playing through a Boss BD-2 pedal with around 20% overdrive.
I concur. Both ‘minus rhythm’ backing tracks sound like one note on an organ with endless sustain. Third track perfect. Windows 7 with latest updates including Flash. Otherwise nice lesson as usual .
(another) Brian
Thx Brian!
Great lesson again! i’m really enjoying playing the lead, and it’s a great opportunity to start playing fingerpicking..
Just one thing over the tab, it seems there is a slight error on the E7 part..
Check it out because tabs easier to take away and when you’re practicing faster than going back to the video.
And i’ve never thank you for the Peter Green vid, as i’ve asked for one months ago. So your work is fantastic and i’m getting better thanks to you.
Request, i’m reading Keith Richards bio at the moment and so am listening to some 70’s Stones tunes..
Would you like to give us some open G, D, E advices? A lesson over that would be fantastic!!!
Brian I love this one.
New MK album coming out next year. Tracker. Should be a good’n.
This lesson seems to be easier for me than many of the others. Guess I need to find more music by MK
Are there other lessons that are similar to the rhythm part of this lesson? It’s a super fun technique that I would love to learn more on.
Don’t understand it! Now please explain it so us beginners could understand it!
