EP007: How To Play Amazing Grace on Guitar – Lesson

Description

I’ve had a lot of requests for gospel recently, and even a specific request for this song so I thought this would be a good one to do in a way that both beginner and intermediate players could enjoy (never excluding advanced players of course). This is my own arrangement of this song and it’s obviously pretty straight forward, however, if you wanted to spice this up a bit it would be easy to do. One obvious place for that would be when it goes to the “G” part, to throw in some bluesy licks in the key of G (I thought about adding those originally but pulled them out because I thought it might be too complicated). Anyway, I hope some of you out there enjoy this arrangement and I hope if gives you ideas on how you could arrange your own songs.

    Brian,
Thank you for doing this. I really enjoy any kind of finger style. Your version is very pretty and full sounding. I have been trying to get down Frieght Train by Elizabeth Cotten, and it has been giving me fits. This is a great song to learn finger style. This is such a nice version you did I wouldn’t want to add any blusey licks. Sweet guitar you got there. Brian, I hope in the future you do more tunes like this.
    Thanks…………fresnojohns

I appreciate you putting this on here.  Hopefully with the tablature,  I can figure the notes out.  Thanks so much for putting helpful stuff on the site.  Do you do any flat picking videos?

@webtrax - most of the videos on this site are played with a pick… just a few that are finger style

Thank you Brian.  I have small hands and short fingers.  My brain gets it quicker than my fingers.  Can you recommend a good acoustic guitar for a small handed female player wannabe?  Right now I am playing an Ibanez AEL-20E.  It may be that the guitar is fine and the piece is over my head for now.  Do I need some exercises for my fingers?  Thanx for any help you can give me.

Hey Bflatdrummer - check out the new lesson that I just posted regarding a good acoustic guitar that I’d recommend.  It would be the perfect guitar for small hands and short fingers.  Just watch the first part of the video and I explain what the guitar is, how much it costs, etc.  Here’s a link: Acoustic Blues Guitar Lesson

Hey Brian.  Yet another great lesson.  I really do like the way you teach these lessons.  You are always very clear and easy to understand.  I have noticed something though that I would like to make a suggestion on…would it be possible on the tablature to list the name of the chord above the bar staff?  Especially on this finger style stuff…to me it would be helpful to follow along with the tabs….It is possible that I’m the only person that has this issue…if that is the case, then feel free to disregard this suggestion all together… :o)

Anyway, great job on the lessons…I always look forward to visiting this website.

For those beginners who can’t play the full F major chord or those with poor action guitars, what alternative chords can replace the F major part when learning the EP007: How To Play Amazing Grace on Guitar - Lesson? Any suggestions or comments?

I have spent a lot of time practicing this piece. Why no revisit it and add the video tab and provide a slow version to practice against.

You have some nuances in your play that are not in the tab.

I think many of your students would appreciate it.

    Thanks
