Description
David Gilmour (guitar player and vocalist for Pink Floyd) is one of my all-time favorite guitar players and I’m actually surprised it’s taken me this long to put together a lesson showcasing his style. One of the reasons it’s taken me so long is because he has SO much depth, it’s actually overwhelming to try and boil things down to a single lesson. I suppose I’ll just have to do others. In this lesson you’ll learn how to play a David Gilmour style lead in the key of C, using the C major scale.

Thanks for the Gilmour! I suppose there’s a place for Malmsteen-like speed, but I’ll take the melodic, ethereal sonic Floyd sound any day.
Geoff White says
Can’t agree more jg21. Less is definitely more.
BIG-AL says
This is the kind of lesson worth taking the time to learn! Love it, yes… more please. Thanks Brian, great stuff!

Pre-bends, bends on bends, vibrato on bends. I love it even if my fingers don’t.

MJR1164 says
Thanks Brian. That was superb and definitely one of those lessons that left me feeling I’d made a quantum leap forwards in my abilities as a player.
If anyone’s feeling like they might want to be a bit adventurous and jam with the man himself, try looking up Pink Floyd’s Coming Back to Life on YouTube.
It has a few extra chords bu the rhythm part is quite easy. All the stuff in Brian’s lesson fits in here.
OK. 1.15pm here in the UK and I’ve been doing this for 5 1/2 hours. Probably ought to think about breakfast. :-)
Todd H says
Only 2 chords for Rhythm progression? Is there an example, key of C. F and C. Would like to see example of rhythm for instance to play through looper
MJR1164 says
Great lesson. Thanks

Great. Love Floyd. Thanks Brian.

Wo…twice now the amazonaws.com files (for the SoundSlice) have totally crashed my Macbook Pro while they were downloading. Strangely, after I re-boot, I’m still logged in on ActiveMelody and everything works fine. It doesn’t seem to cause any harm, just a delay in order to re-boot. Am I the only person to experience this?
maradonagol says
Simply awesome lesson, you were able to include key aspects of DG’s style……I have to say….I got blisters on my fingers!!!!!
Thanks Brian…
darrennie says
Love me some Floyd.
Thanks so Much Brian.
Brian Belsey says
This is really addictive, as Brian says in the video. I love doing these 3-half step bends. I hope we get some more DG style.
Eclecticwhyzas says
Brian, you struck the pay-dirt of my soul on this one. I Love David Gilmore’s playing and this is like the juice of the fruit. I could play this one for hours. You Rock! Please…More Gilmore style.
fwildi says
That is a BRILLIANT lecture. You really did catch his signature sound and licks. I am looking forward to be reunited with my guitar Friday. Keep on the good work. I am definitively becoming a premium member.
DKB says
as always great lesson goog mrlodies to add to our bag of tricks.. One thing I really have been meaning to mention, Thanks for not ALWAYS trying to sell us all this extra cd lessons packages. With you, I pay my small yearly premium membership and “wham” I have full access to all of your lessons, jam tracks tabs ect. I love the no pressure lessons. You are a great guy. The new set up is fun too. I can go straight to the slow walk through, find all that I can do by myself then come back and lissen, with my tail tucked between my legs, : ) and lissen to the Teacher ( that would be YOU.)
Jeff Bowers says
This might just be my favorite so far. For those of us that can’t shred (or have no wish to), I thank you, Brian!

Wow thanks Brian, can I be cheeky and ask for Marooned. I use David’s Sound on Sound signature effect on a GT-10, patch is downloadable to the device or get off YouTube for GT-10 and programme into it .Its worth it.
Another thing, of all the guitar programs on the net yours is the best ,Awesome!

More Dave Gilmore?? Yes, yes, yes! PLEASE!! My favorite guitar player, gets sooo much out of so few notes, rather listen to this style of playing rather than any shredder! More, more more…

Just signed up as a result of this lesson. Well done… and would love more Gilmour lessons.
jalalo says
thanks Brian… great lesson… love David Gilmore style… more like this please 🙂
tommc says
Really enjoyed this lesson Brian. It forced me to experiment with my delay pedal more since I normally only use it for slapback. More Gilmore would be good.
A suggestion: I think it would be helpful, especially for beginners, if you sometimes referred to the strings by their note name rather than “the one string”. You could mix it into the lessons. Everyone needs to learn the notes at some point, not just patterns and boxes.
Chuckm says
Great lesson! I look forward to having more in the style of David Gilmour.
Darren Jones says
Excellent
left me Comfortably Numb,
more please master
jay says
How do I download the backing track to my iPhone or macbook when I click on the link below it just opens it on another page???
Brian says
@Jay - if you RIGHT click (assuming you’re on a PC) and then choose “Save As…” you can save the MP3 file to your local hard drive. Or if you’re on a Mac you an hold down the “control” key and do the same thing
jay says
Thanks Brian expect my video of my attempt at this one

Brian, this is has been my favorite lesson so far. Great job of capturing the Gilmore style and putting it into simple context that most anyone can learn. In Part 1 you said that if you get enough requests, you would do more Gilmore style. I’d like to add my request and hope to see more of “The Floyd” sound in future lessons. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Gary L.

Was browsing through lessons and found this. LOVE IT!!! This is worth the premium fee alone.

Only recently joined having stumbled across your lessons. This is absolutely brilliant! I love how you not only teach the notes but provide the understanding behind why it works. I get completely lost (in a good way!) playing your lesson and then improvising my own licks based on the new knowledge and techniques – priceless. Thanks Brian. I see almost all the comments ask for more Dave Gilmour! Are there other lessons now done that I’ve missed?
Keep those lessons coming – Jim
