Chet Atkins Finger Style (Blues) Guitar Lesson – EP057

Description

This is an original composition that has several Chet Atkins licks incorporated into a bluesy format and can be played on acoustic or electric guitar. If you’re new to fingerstyle playing (without a pick) and have always wanted to learn, this would be a great lesson to start with. It will be slow at first and even frustrating, but just stick with it and don’t try to play it fast – just try to be accurate.

I can forget this one too. I can do bar chords worth a crap. I never could, and I’ve been beating on this guitar for years.

Nice lesson.  This is a big challenge as I am new to fingerpicking.  I shall persevere and hope to get somewhere.  Thanks

Great Job Brian. I’ve seen tons of attempts to teach Chet’s fingerstyle, and yours surpasses all of them by far.

    Hi Brian,

I love your lessons and your style of teaching. I’ve been a member for a while and will continue to be. But this one is like chewing gum and walking at the same time. My blues soloing has really improved since I became a member.

    Thank, Jimmy

Thanks Brian for a really good lesson.  I’ve tried several times to learn a Chet style, but never got close.  Happily, I’m getting the hang of this lesson.  At first I went too far too fast, and got myself confused. But now I’m progressing by nailing one section at a time.  I’VE stuck with the A7 until I’m almost on auto-pilot, and I’m now ready to move on to the E chord.
If… WHEN! - I get this lesson in the bag, I’m going back to your DELTA blues lesson which I abandoned a while back!
Keep up the good work - worth every penny of the annual subscription charge!
    Pete.

Great lesson in fingerpicking. I like your thorough explanations.
I got a bit confused though in the beginning when I looked at the tab. It seems like it does not match exactly with your explanation.

Amazing. Now that we’re at the Chet Atkins hope you do a lesson with Chet and Mark Knopfler. Above all, I mean the song:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pklluASxfA
and its six minutes especially. How does he play that up and down the piece, I would like to know. I know we are many, Brian. Thanks for a great lesson. I’m impressed.

Hi Brian. Well, I am still persevering with this Chet Atkins finger picking style! I am glad I am not alone in being a slow learner ! It is something I have had to live with all my life, but I am a “plodder” and get there in the end. I have developed my own finger picking style over many yeears , but still finding Chet’s style very challenging ! Having said all that ,I was so pleased you produced this lesson. It is a style I have admired and wanted to learn for many years, so very many thanks Brian, excelent tuition. Kind regards. Patrick Kalkhoven ( Countryman )

Ochomarvo don’t give up on the barre chords!! It took me a couple of years before I could play them. I would try, fail,  then go back to playing without them, but I kept going back and then one day it just happened. Hang in there!

I can do bar chords just go not good at them , I stay away if I can…the music I play doesn’t require them much anyways…

I can’t believe someone complained about no fret markers.
What….. they want you to spoon feed’em more then you do already?
How could they ever learn to play without online lessons, with video and TAB?
    Life is hard………….

Hi Brian, The damping effect on the E and A strings cannot be achieved with the left hand as those strings are open in the A7 chord. Yet, I agree the damped effect is essential here. I’m wondering if I need to do this by use of some part of the heel of the right hand. Any tips?

The tab is not correct. The first A7 and the first E. For both chords the last note(s).

Hi Brian, Thank you for the great lesson.
    I have one question.
How did you cut for open string like open 6 string for bass.
I can hear bass constantly stopping for a moment.
if it is not open string, i can release my left fingers.
but it it is open string.. i don’t know how to stop.

    Hi Brian,

I have the same question as Pearse re: the damping of the A and E strings with those strings being open on the A7 chord.

Great lesson, love your fingerpicking lessons.

Finished the new lesson early so i thought how about a bit of Chet , just started this and only on the first bit , patience and practice along with determination will pay off .I want this one under my fingers so bad.Every guitarist should have some finger style in their repertoire i have always avoided it in the past but time to man up dig in and face the music . I can see Brian is a fantastic all rounder fingerstyle Hybrid and pick that’s my goal .

    Hi Brian,
Antigua here, I too am a bit confused. The first part does not seem to match the tab. Or is it just me? I love these Chet Adkins pieces and really enjoy the style. Can you please clear this up for me?
    Thank you.
