Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, I’ll show you how to play a slow, bluesy ballad on acoustic guitar all by yourself. No accompaniment is required. I’ll also provide information on chord theory that will help you understand how certain chords work together, so that you can start to create your own compositions.

Winner, winner, Chicken Dinner! This lesson sounds so interesting and fun to learn. I can hardly wait until tomorrow to learn it..
Dan
Brian, you’re like the Ever Ready Bunny when it comes to whipping these lessons out. Great lesson! Thank you
Outstanding!!!
Thank you Brian. I hope we have more lessons like this one, the 210, or 199. The rhythms and licks in this lesson really enriched my playing. I am an engineer, not a musician. My ability to read the music notation therefore is minimum. Your PDF tab and video helped to bring my guitar skill to the next level. I used to strumming and picking the same thing over and over and started getting bore really quick. Now I feel more fun and enjoy to play for others to sing.
Tien… i use to play the same thing over and over also? it was like beating my head against the wall… but the nice thing about beating ur head against the wall? it feels so good when u stop 🙂 maybe ur background in engineering will actually help ur guitar playing? i mean, music seems kinda mathematical (to me anywayz)
Great lesson Brian
Thanks
Ray
As I was listening to that, words for a song to accompany it started coming into my head. There’s something about that melody that just cries out to become a song.
Good one Brian, for the first few bars in particular i was thinking Neil Young. (maybe some neil later?) All the best Kenny Mac.
Hi Brian,
This is a beautiful lesson. Sure goes on my ever growing list of lessons to learn!
Your discussion of the major and minor chords that go together— that certainly was a lightbulb moment for me! From your recent lessons, I am now beginning to add playing around the chords to playing the pentatonic scales.. you are expanding my horizons…
The melody reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it yet!
Cheers,
Rich F
I have been here a few years now and love the site. I guess I am going to be the bad guy and post the first negative comment I have seen since I joined the site. We pay for this site so why do we now have to deal with ads appearing in the video lessons? Learning to play the guitar is tough enough on its own. Now we have to shift our focus and be distracted to move the mouse pointer to a tiny little “x” to remove the ad. The same ad that blocks our viewing the fingering on the neck taking place during the lesson. Call me silly or a negative Nelly but I didn’t pay to have to navigate around advertisements. I guess it benefits Brian financially but I still didn’t pay to join the site to deal with advertisements. I joined for the quality lessons. I am sure I am beating a dead horse so it may just be time for me to move on from this site? 🙁
I don’t have any ads on mine. Maybe try the free adblock ap?
It doesn’t benefit me at all financially – in fact it hurts me because when people click on those they leave the site. I see no money from it. It’s something that YouTube has implemented. I’ve sent a possible workaround solution to my developer so hopefully we can get those removed!
Hi Brian
I am new to this and so far I have really enjoyed the lessons. Is there a way to download the video parts of the lessons? My connection is not the greatest and it drops out pretty often. I can get the youtube parts but not the member lessons.
Very nice lesson. I enjoy so much the way you explain the chord progression and the playing within the chords. So instructive. I cannot get enough of those ! I have been a member for 4 years and never had ads coming up during the videos. I use Chrome if it helps. Never had to change the settings. Hope it helps.
Wonderful lesson Brian. Maybe you don’t think so, but I think your Ry Cooder influence on this lesson definitely comes through. Also, some of the country sounding parts of the lesson remind me of Gram Parsons.
I love this lesson. Working my way through it now. Thanks Brian.
No ads on mine here in Australia.
Beautiful composition Brian! A lot of tasty ideas. I can’t wait to dig in and mine the gold in this one.
Enjoy this lesson, it is as above tombot says beautiful composition as well as good lesson.. looking forward to this tomorrow!
No ads on mine here in The Netherlands.
Nice lesson, as always!
I would like to say that I have never seen any ads on my lessons, but if I did, and it really bothered me, I would probably text Brian and ask him about it. He seems like a reasonable chap, and he offered a perfectly clear, concise and honest response to this subscriber’s beef. This might be Brian’s program, but he doesn’t own the platform and I doubt that he has any control over the actions of YouTube.
One of your best compositions in my opinion. Nice job Brian. My acoustic is down and out but can’t wait to get into this and hear it on the electric…
…also I don’t have add problems
No ads on mine here also in Australia.
I’d like to complain about my favorites list. It’s far too long and I keep adding to it every week 😉
Keep ’em coming Brian!
Just got through it, now digging in and putting all the parts together. Amazing songwriting. This is an awesome lesson, thanks Brian.
Gret lesson for home office survival… loved it
