Hey Tom, yep, even that one – I haven’t used an amp on any of my videos.. just running straight into the computer. For the blues lead course I used a Line 6 M-13 Stomp box… but was using just basic tube overdrive to get the tone. Those pickups in the 335 account for a lot of that sound. Lately, however I’ve been using a Boss BD-2 (Blues Driver) pedal.. running into a Line 6 Pod (for some basic amp modeling and reverb), and then out of the Pod and into audio interface device attached to my computer. I used that for the newest Albert Collins style lesson for example. You’ll notice it’s a pretty heavy sound… all of that crunch is coming from the BD-2.

Hi Brian.
Just joined. Thanks for making such a great site!
Just read your response to the original post. Your guitar sounds great.
Just wanted to ask you a couple of questions about your cherry ES-335:
* What type of pick ups do you have?
* What year is it?I have been looking to by one and just curious about yours because it sounds great.
Cheers!

I bought it brand new in around 2008 – it’s the Dot series (dot inlays on the fretboard as opposed to block) … The pickups are the stock humbucker pickups that come with it. Definitely one of the coolest guitars out there in my opinion… sounds great playing it really loud with a lot of overdrive, or clean channel.

Brian,
Agree with the other posters. Your site is great for learning.
Regarding yout tone, when you say your playing through your computer is that then amplified to your computer speakers?
Trying to get my head round this whole ‘playing wihtout an amp’ thing. Thanks

Gary, yes exactly… the sound that I hear is coming from speakers that are directly hooked up to my audio interface. The exact one that I’m using (which is fantastic by the way) – is by Native Instruments and it’s called Komplete Audio 6 – if you Google that you’ll see the one I’m referring to. That audio interface device allows you to connect speakers directly to it… If you ever want to do any home recording that’s the way to go… with a basic laptop (which is all I use) and the audio interface.. I’m able to record guitar, keyboard, vocal, you name it.

Hi Brian: just to let you know that I will be purchasing the blues course today. You are doing wonders for the guitar world. Keep up the good work and ignore those that don’t know any better. I am refering to some of the stupid comments some people have to make which is just an attempt to distract from their own shortcomings. thanks again.

Brian thanks for the information on your tone and your recording setup. I will check that interface out, I need to start laying some music down and want something that won’t break the bank and be sufficient for what I’m doing. Just loving the site, keep more rhythm guitar lessons coming, I myself cannot get enough rhythm playing.
I agree with you that if you put a guitarist in a band that can play lead and when it’s time for him/her to hold a groove, many are lost. Jimi Hendrix was one of the best at doing so many different inversions when playing rhythm,,,Robin Ford is another one of my favorites when it come’s to solid rhythm playing.
