        Hi All,

I currently subscribe to guitar tricks. Looks like active melody may have a better approach to learning blues and other improvisation?

Can anyone compare them as thinking about trying full membership of active melody.

        Thanks
        Roddy

          Hi Roddy
I’ve never tried guitar tricks so can’t comment on that but if you want to learn more than just songs and scales you can’t go wrong with a full membership on here. Everything is broken down so you get a complete understanding of what you’re playing. Some amazing stand alone acoustic blues compositions to work through, as well as some fantastic lead lessons so if blues is your thing then go ahead and subscribe. You won’t regret it.
          Regards

          Jason

I second Jason above. I’ve only been a member for few months but I’ve learned so much from the lessons here. On top of that, there’s a great & active AM community.

Do it, its worth it. My advice ,” which I dont take” , is dont try to learn 4 lessons at once lol Its easy to fall into that trap, but I think if a person got a lesson or 2 totally down at a time, the progress would be best. Its worth the money, some things are slowly clicking for me and Ive played for years and am just now starting to understand,, Brian is a great teacher.

I used to subscribe to guitar tricks. They have a blues course on there. From what I remember there were short 3-5 minute lessons divided up into categories upon categories. It was good with teaching the feel about the blues but it didn’t provide full compositions unless you copied a particular well known song from an aritst. I won’t forget – “It’s not about what note you play or how many but how you play the individual note”. It was teaching you an essence of how to play the blues. Later lessons were much more geared to what felt like solely electric guitar playing. You can finish the blues course in months. And compared to active melody there is not that much to practice with for years. I somewhat enjoyed the blues part. The beginning lessons were brutal for me and I definitely forced myself through that couldn’t connect to the beginner instructor.

There is another site I subscribed to that helped me out very nicely with beginner improvisation.

The advantage to active melody is you get a whole composition and a lot more variety. I think this is good for a beginner players because you can follow along note by note figure your own method at your own pace on how to follow each note and eventually be rewarded for playing a whole composition if your patient and practice. It offers a lot of reward for the beginner intermediate and I feel like I learn a lot. I also have a lot more to practice from these lessons for years than guitar tricks. The variety with the electric and acoustic is much more extensive here and the genres that mix with blues such as country, gospel, blue grass and even particular artists styles. You can’t help but to learn theory and how the notes are connected. Although I’m not there yet I see this being useful for advanced players due to sheer variety of styles and theory that advanced players can start to improvise from and make their own.

I’d suggest you subscribe for a month and see for yourself. I think the premium membership is an amazing value.

                    READ THIS WITH INTEREST

I am currently with True fire ( there was a deal on).
I find that platform quite frustrating. It has loads of content, but if you try to follow a consistent path through all available content it becomes very disjointed. You finish one, and you think you are progressing, then the next person starts doing something completely different and it does not flow.
Is there a clear path on this site where you can follow a line of progression that makes sense?

Shh! I should go back and pay again, and I just joined January 15th. I took one lesson, then I took a suggestion from here and started the essentials. The essential theory class helped me bigtime as another piece of the music theory puzzle. The CAGED system lesson was excellent, and now I’m on the lead guitar course. All with pdfs and videos I enjoy playing the music pieces especially with the backing tracks. I think now you can understand why I’d say I’d pay an annual again.
