In an interview, Brian once mentioned that Norman Blake’s music had a major influence on his own.
Here’s a bluegrass song, “Prettiest Little Girl in the County,” by the great master, which he and his wife used to play on stage at a breakneck pace (200 BPM).
The song consists solely of C, G, and G7 chords with a capo on the 3rd fret.
The challenge for me, of course, was the tempo (I could barely manage 150 BPM), but also hitting the individual strings precisely while flatpicking and getting the musical phrasing right.
To add a bit of background to the melody, I also accompanied it with simple chords on the rhythm guitar.

You handled the speed at that tempo very well Dieter. A lot of very fine pickin’ on display here. Thanks for sharing. All the best! 😎🎸😎

You played that extremely well Dieter. It sounded great.

This was very nicely done Dieter. I don’t know this song so I don’t know the tempo at which it would normally be played. All i can say, is this song did not appear to be a problem for you at all 😉.
By the way. You seem to have a real affinity for bluegrass style and you are pretty good at it.

Thanks, Geoff.
Here’s Norman’s song with his wife at the original tempo. I practiced up to 160 BPM, but it sounded like someone was whipping me, and all the musicality was gone.
As a rule, I’d rather not push myself to my limits; I prefer to take it a little slower.Dieter

So beautifully played.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Fancy flat picking, Dieter. It’s really cool how many different styles of music you can play. Rock, classical, bluegrass, finger style or pick, either one. A stellar performance on this song.

Ah, Dieter Norman Blake is one of my biggest influences. My brother took me to see him in Pittsburgh PA when I was very young. Even then, I appreciated the show and his guitar work. Great job on this. Yes, the tempo can be a challenge however, you handled it well. Your performance is melodic and seamless.
