Just as there are 4 chords that make up a very large portion of pop music, (I,V,vi,IV aka Hotel California, etc.), there is a jazz lick that is used just as much, not only in jazz, but, rock, orchestration, hip hop, and quite a few others…

It’s such a lick that “the lick” has it’s own FaceBook group. You-tuber Adam Neely once played “the lick” for 5 hours, but, I won’t link to that.. lol (Adam has a great channel for really technical explanations of music, though)

This one and half minute video shows what I am talking about, pay attention to the last song and see if you recognize it.

Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

That’s a very cool insight, and “the lick” is so easy, and it can be phrased to work over just about anything; i’e got a feeling in the next blues Challenge we’re gonna hear “the lick” a lot!

Okay, Gene, I’ll bite. It sounds like a C minor lick, 1, 2, flat 3, 4, 2, flat 7, 5. That’s an oldie. Did Player have any other hits?

According their wiki page, they had one other hit. Eric Clapton asked them to to tour with him in 1978 and the keyboardist from Steppin Wolf played with them on tours. The original keyboardist went on to join the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It’s fun looking into music history.. hehe
